Kim Kardashian West Discovers Options for Vaginal Delivery of Breech Baby From Documentary 'Heads Up' by LA-Based Celebrity Prenatal Guru

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, Kim Kardashian West revealed that she is trying "anything" to turn her baby and avoid a Cesarean delivery, writing on her blog that the documentary Heads Up: The Disappearing Art of Vaginal Breech Delivery had opened her eyes to the option of vaginal delivery of her breech baby.

This week, Kim Kardashian West revealed that she is trying "anything" to turn her baby and avoid a Cesarean delivery, writing on her blog that the documentary Heads Up: The Disappearing Art of Vaginal Breech Delivery had opened her eyes to the option of vaginal delivery of her breech baby.

"I found it very interesting that I do have this option to deliver a breech baby as opposed to just jumping into a C-section," Kardashian West wrote on her blog, after watching Heads Up. "Obviously, if it's an emergency and for the safety of my son, I will get a C-section — bt if I don't need one, I'd rather not."

Heads Up, produced by Dr. Elliot Berlin, the well-known, Los Angeles-based prenatal wellness guru, shares the journey of several women seeking breech delivery options, including two celebrity mothers Morena Baccarin, star of Homeland and Gotham, and Kimberly Van Der Beek, wife of actor James.

About four percent of full-term babies are in a breech (not head-down) position, and for the vast majority of those women and babies, the prescription is an "automatic C-section"—with the risks that accompany major abdominal surgery for the mother and an earlier, possibly riskier delivery for the baby.  According to Dr. Berlin, most new obstetricians are never trained in delivering breech babies vaginally, even though the current position of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is that vaginal delivery can be a reasonable option for breech births.

"This whole delivery gives me anxiety, not gonna lie," Kardashian West wrote. "I hope the baby turns and all goes well but I'm prepared for anything!"

ABOUT Heads Up: The Disappearing Art of Vaginal Breech Delivery

A breech baby is born nearly every four minutes in the United States. Until the year 2000, a woman could opt to birth her breech baby vaginally or via surgery. Then, in 2001, a study came out that took away one of those options. The study was later found to be faulty, but the damage was already done--vaginal breech birth was almost completely eliminated from medical school training and from delivery rooms.

Heads Up features several women confronted with the disappearance of this option for their breech babies. Among others, actress Morena Baccarin and holistic living personality Kimberly Van Der Beek struggle to find providers who will attend them in a vaginal breech birth--all under the pressure of their imminent due dates. Through their personal accounts and the perspectives of medical professionals, Heads Up explores this widely misunderstood subject and the need to restore this lost art and lost option.
