Coriant Revolutionizes Metro Optical Networks with Industry's First Fully Pluggable Optical Layer

Coriant (News - Alert), a proven supplier of innovative networking solutions to leading network operators in over 100 countries, today launched the Coriant® Pluggable Optical Layer, an innovative and cost-saving approach to building out flexible, high-speed metro optical networks to meet a broad range of fixed and mobile applications.

The Pluggable Optical Layer introduces a revolutionary approach to metro optical service enablement by disaggregating the full suite of optical layer components into compact pluggables, including amplifiers, variable optical attenuators, power monitoring, combiners, splitters, WSSs, etc. By providing the ability to mix and match different functional components, the Pluggable Optical Layer enables operators to customize metro optical network deployments (e.g., fixed DWDM, CWDM, and ROADM (News - Alert)) without the need to pay for unwanted or unneeded functionality. As end-user needs evolve, new functionality can be easily and cost-effectively introduced by adding or swapping additional components, while preserving investment in those components that do not need to change.

The small footprint and low power consumption of the Pluggable Optical Layer solution, combined with Coriant's support for high-density 10G and 100G optical transport, provides a highly cost-effective approach to scaling bandwidth in metro networks and extending optical express capabilities closer to the metro edge. The Puggable Optical Layer supports a broad range of metro network topologies and configurations (e.g., point-to-point, ring, ROADM spur), and helps service providers protect their investment by enabling seamless and non-disruptive upgrade to full ROADM capabilities without sacrificing footprint, power consumption, or cost-effectiveness. The solution can reduce costs by up to 30% compared to traditional approaches, and enables initial deployment with a low start-up cost and pay-as-you-grow scalability for cost-efficient growth.

The Pluggable Optical Layer builds upon and complements Coriant's leadership in Metro ROADM and Long Haul DWDM, and is designed for use across Coriant's end-to-end product portfolio. The solution is initially supported on the industry-leading Coriant® 7100 Packet Optical Transport Platform, which includes the 7100 Pico and 7100 Nano.

"In today's dynamic and competitive market for metro services, operators do not want to choose between low cost and flexibility when it comes to building or extending metro optical networks," said Brian Nagle, Director of Product Line Management, Coriant. "By introducing the first fully pluggable optical layer, they do not have to make this choice and can implement a cost-effective solution today that can easily adapt to meet future service requirements."
