Florida International University College of Business Selects Mediasite Lecture Capture, Sees Explosive Growth in Video

In just a few years, the College of Business at Florida International University went from having a couple professors willing to try lecture capture to explosive demand that increases each semester. Faculty have created more than 2,500 videos - 5,000+ hours of content - with nearly 100,000 views using Mediasite by Sonic Foundry (News - Alert), Inc. (NASDAQ: SOFO), the trusted global leader for video creation and management solutions.

Challenge: Add warmth to an online environment, reach more students simultaneously and offer flexibility to its students

The College of Business' nearly 10,000 students have hectic lives, families and demanding careers and aren't always able to make it to class. That, coupled with the fact that the university is a research institution, leaving professors stretched for time to teach additional courses, meant it needed a lecture capture solution easy enough for faculty to use and flexible enough for students.

The college sought an all-in-one platform for comprehensive capture and integrated video management that would scale to meet the growing faculty and student demand for lecture capture.

Solution: Mediasite by Sonic Foundry

The college's undergraduate and graduate programs are able to reach more students in real time with Mediasite by offering a synchronous online experience to distance students as their face-to-face peers attend class on campus. Online students participate in discussions, ask questions and answer polls via Mediasite, and all students can access on-demand content for review via Blackboard (News - Alert) learning management system.

"Mediasite lecture capture adds warmth to the online environment. You're able to see you professor interact with students and hear your peers in class communicate. You feel like you're there in the classroom," said Henry Dominguez, system administrator, FIU.

The college's Mediasite deployment includes MultiView Recorders, Mediasite's unique MultiView technology that records and streams up to four HD content sources simultaneously to transform complex concepts, simulations and demonstrations into engaging experiences, and My Mediasite Desktop Recorder that makes it easy for students and faculty to create demos, video training, online office hours, flipped classes, lectures and assignments right from their computer.

Results: Explosive video creation

"This semester alone has seen our weekly live and recorded sessions more than double, so we're excited to see it continue to grow and flourish," Dominguez said. "With Mediasite, students don't have to worry about taking notes. Everything is captured and available on-demand for review, and Mediasite's search lets students pinpoint exact areas of interest."

FIU won an Enterprise Video Award this year at the Unleash Mediasite User Conference. Watch its nomination video here.

"Today's students are demanding lecture capture, and faculty must embrace video technology in their classrooms to stay relevant and competitive," said Gary Weis, CEO, Sonic Foundry. "It's rewarding to see that Florida International University professors are welcoming Mediasite lecture capture with open arms."
