Coriant Participates in Industry-First Wireless Transport SDN Proof-of-Concept

Coriant (News - Alert), a proven supplier of innovative networking solutions to leading network operators in over 100 countries, today announced it has successfully demonstrated multi-vendor interoperability in the industry's first Wireless Transport SDN Proof-of-Concept (PoC) sponsored by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). The PoC testing, which demonstrated the flexibility and programmability of a multi-layer transport network controlled by an SDN controller for efficient network resource utilization, was hosted by Telefónica (News - Alert) and IMDEA Networks Institute, with support from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. As an ONF member company, Coriant participated in PoC use case demonstrations with its SDN-enabled Coriant® 8615 Smart Router, an industry-leading IP/MPLS aggregation and routing solution widely deployed in Tier 1 networks around the world.

"As a long-standing technology partner to Telefónica, we were pleased to work with Coriant as part of this important industry-first PoC that marks significant progress towards a more open and dynamic wireless transport infrastructure," said Mr. Luis M. Contreras of Telefónica, Global CTO unit, responsible for the PoC in Telefónica.

Designed to encourage the development, testing, and implementation of open SDN for Wireless Transport, the ONF-sponsored PoC testing showcased the value of multi-layer optimization across an open SDN infrastructure. Among the PoC test scenarios conducted during the multi-vendor event, the Coriant® 8615 Smart Router served as the routing infrastructure in a flow-based use case that used open interfaces to adapt the router Quality of Service (QoS) configurations to the quality of wireless transport links, thus enabling the overall optimization of traffic utilizationin the network.

"Multi-layer optimization is an imperative for network operators as unpredictable traffic demands driven by video and cloud applications raise the stakes for operational efficiency and service agility in transport infrastructure, including mobile backhaul networks," said Paul Smelters, Executive Vice President, Product Management and Marketing, Coriant. "This first-ever Wireless Transport SDN PoC further validates the critical role that SDN-enabled programmability, automation, and control will play in multi-vendor environments as wireless networks evolve."

The Coriant® 8615 is a 44 Gbps full duplex IP/MPLS router that supports high-density 1G/10G aggregation in a wide variety of network applications, including mobile backhaul. Ideal for aggregation of Gigabit Ethernet (GE) traffic onto 10G rings, the 8615 provides power and cost efficiency in a compact 1RU form factor. The 8615 is optimized for LTE (News - Alert)-A applications and SDN-enabled network architectures to meet the needs of fast growing mobility and data services.

This PoC originated in ONF's Open Transport Working Group and evolved from a specification into an open source software project in the OpenSourceSDN.org community that ONF sponsors and that is open to the public.
