Patron Introduces 'Know Your NOM' Tequila Education Tool

ATOTONILCO EL ALTO, Jalisco, Mexico, Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Patrón Spirits Company, in an ongoing effort to better educate people about the tequila category, has launched an interactive "Know Your NOM" digital tool that allows consumers to trace any bottle of tequila back to the specific tequila producer in Mexico that made it. The platform, which can be found at www.KnowYourNOM.com, provides people the ability to learn exactly who the producer is of their favorite tequila and the general area where that distillery is located, simply by following the unique NOM (Norma Oficial Mexicana) number found on their bottle of tequila.

The NOM number, which is required to be indicated on every bottle of tequila authentically produced and bottled in Mexico, is a unique four-digit code assigned by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT), on behalf of the Mexican government. It not only certifies that the tequila is in fact made and bottled in Mexico, but also refers to the specific authorized producer.

"Tequila is one of the fastest-growing spirits categories in the world, and new brands are continually being introduced. With this expanding interest in the category, we thought it would be useful and interestig to help people search the CRT database to discover the origins of tequila brands, including ours," said Lee Applbaum, Patrón's Global Chief Marketing Officer. "At Patrón, we only make Patrón. But it's interesting to note that there are more than 1,700 registered brands of tequila, yet there are only about 140 licensed tequila distilleries in Mexico. Many distilleries share their agave supply and production equipment to make several different tequila brands, and this new and engaging educational tool allows people to cross reference tequila producers and their distilleries by brand, or by NOM number, to search and navigate this information."

The NOM number assigned to the Hacienda Patrón distillery in Jalisco, Mexico is 1492. Every bottle of Patrón tequila sold around the world proudly includes this number on the front label. The number is only found on bottles of Patrón as no other brand of tequila is produced at the Patrón distillery.

The "Find Your NOM" application features a highly interactive map of the tequila regions in Mexico, and as users move across the picturesque landscape (on desktop, mobile, or tablet), tequila distillery NOMs come into view, and can be selected to then learn it's respective information. Or users can search by NOM or by specific tequila brand. The app is powered by current and publicly available data from the CRT, which contains details about every brand of tequila and every licensed tequila producer in Mexico. The searchable data utilized for this tool originates with the CRT. It is then curated, updated, and made available by Tequila Matchmaker, a mobile app for tequila enthusiasts.

The "Find Your NOM" site will be supported by print and digital advertising, and social media outreach. For more information, visit www.KnowYourNOM.com, and follow the discussion online at #KnowYourNOM.
