Microsemi Launches Best-in-Class Low Capacitance Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Oct. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq: MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced a unique new series of patented, ultra-low capacitance power transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode products. Leveraging the company's 50-year heritage in high reliability TVS technology and its unique radio frequency (RF) PIN diode expertise, the new devices provide protection of high speed data lines and other applications where the threat requirement's magnitude greatly surpasses the capability of other typical low capacitance TVS devices for Ethernet protection and other data interfaces with speeds up to 500 megabits per second (Mbit/s).

Microsemi Corporation.

The new 1N8149 to 1N8182 and 1N8149US to 1N8182US surface mount low capacitance TVS diode products are available as 150 watt (W) peak pulse power at 10/1,000 microseconds with very low capacitance of only four picofarads (pF) maximum. The 150W TVS diodes equate to greater than 1,000W at 8/20 microseconds and are offered in voltages ranging from 6.8 volts (V) to 170V. They also comply with high-end industrial and avionics electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transient (EFT) and lower level lightning threats in accordance with IEC61000-4-2, IEC61000-4-5 and RTCA-DO160 specifications. Higher power ratings of 500W at 10/1,000 microseconds with low capacitance are in development for even higher transient threats.

"The trends toward increased aircraft electrification, greater reliability and higher fuel efficiency are on the rise, and consequently driving the need for increasingly capable, lighter and smaller TVS solutions that provide superior protection against transient over-voltage occurrences. From a global demand perspective, the overall market for protection devices is likely to reach $1 billion by 2018," said Leon Gross, senior director and business unit manager for Microsemi's Power Discretes and Modules business unit. "As a leader in high-reliability solutions, Microsemi continues to execute on a full range of innovative product developments to support the stringent and evolving needs of this industry."

Microsemi's TVS diodes provide aircraft and other electrical systems with critical protection by going into avalanche breakdown within no more than a few nanoseconds after a strike, clamping the transient voltage and routing its current to the ground.

Microsemi: Continued Leadership in TVS Devices
Microsemi TVS devices have been deployed across major commercial airframes that are currently in use worldwide throughout the industry. The company's TVS products are also used in multiple engine control units and actuator controls, as well as a variety of power distribution, environmental control, communications and instrumentation systems.

1N8149 to 1N8182 and 1N8149US to 1N8182US surface mount TVS series key features include:
