ONUG Sessions Foster Dialogue Amongst Stakeholders Navigating Largest IT Industry Changes

The Open Networking User Group (ONUG) today announced speakers and topics for the popular Town Hall Meeting and Great Debate, scheduled to take place at ONUG Fall 2015, hosted by Morgan Stanley and New York University at NYU's Kimmel Center, November 3rd-5th.

The Town Hall Meeting provides a forum for open discussion between IT business and industry leaders to explore issues associated with operationalizing open infrastructure technologies. This fall's ONUG Town Hall meeting will take place on November 5th with Greg Lavender, CTO of Citigroup moderating a panel of industry leaders including:

  • Martin Casado, Senior VP and General Manager, Networking and Security Business Unit, VMware
  • Ken Duda, CTO/SVP Software Engineering, Arista
  • Tim Hockin, Senior Staff Software Engineer, Cluster Management, Google (News - Alert)
  • Tobias Knaup, Co-founder and CTO, Mesosphere
  • Madhu Venugopal, CTO of Networking, Docker

The Town Hall meeting will focus on how to use hybrid cloud services with a split application architecture. Panelists will field audience questions and explore the new challenges faced by architects as they interconnect and operationally manage this "split architecture," combiningdynamic scale-out with resilient scale-up.

Ernest Lefner, SVP, Network Engineering at Bank of America and ONUG co-founder, will moderate this fall's Great Debate, which will take place on November 4th and focus on whether software is the best approach for innovation. Dr. P. Brighten Godfrey, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will argue that open software, and the use of software-defined networking to separate control from the underlying networking hardware, is helping to solve long-standing networking problems. Meanwhile, Dr. Douglas Comer, Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University (News - Alert), will contest that adding more software will have negative effects because software is expensive to produce and has the potential to contain bugs.

"The Town Hall Meeting and Great Debate are two of the most popular sessions at every ONUG event, as they truly spark a dialogue between the user, academic, and vendor communities," said Nick Lippis, Chairman and Co-Founder of ONUG. "The topics are selected based on feedback from the user community, and further highlight our commitment to providing ONUG members with invaluable and current insights on the challenges facing the industry today."
