HealthCore receives PCORI patient-based research award to advance understanding of patient health care experienceHealthCore has received an award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study how payers can help PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network developed by PCORI, generate insight that helps health care decision-makers better understand patients' health care experiences and assess their health care outcomes. The research will incorporate data from the payer into the process of patient identification and evaluation currently in use by existing Patient-Powered Research Network sites within PCORnet. PCORnet encourages patients and caregivers to participate in research opportunities and contributes to research comparing the effectiveness of various treatments. Targeted populations include patients with breast cancer, arthritis, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, and vasculitis within PCORnet's Patient Powered Research Networks. The award will allow HealthCore, the outcomes research company for Anthem Inc., to structure and test different ways to outreach to members and engage them within PCORI's national PPRN research infrastructure, which is made up of groups of patients and caregivers interested in participating in comparative effectiveness research. "Real-world research is rapidly becoming a critical aspect of research within the health care community and payers hold key data necessary to assess these outcomes of care," said Kevin Haynes, project lead and HealthCore clinical epidemiologist for government academic research. "With this award, we hope to develop and test the methods to link together payer data with the rich data from the patient research networks sites, enabling an even deeper assessment of real-world outcomes." The HealthCore research team, led by Haynes, has been approved pending completion of a business and programmatic review by PCORI staff and issuance of a formal award contract. HealthCore's study was selected for PCORI funding through a highly competitive review process in which patients, clinicians and other stakeholders joined clinical scientists to evaluate the proposals. Applications were assessed for scientific merit, how well they will engage patients and other stakeholders and their methodological rigor among other criteria. "This project was selected for PCORI funding not only for its scientific merit and commitment to engaging patients and other stakeholders, but also for its potential to fill an important gap in our health knowledge and give people information to help them weigh the effectiveness of their care options," said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH. The PCORI award is one of several leading public projects HealthCore has been involved in over the years, including the Food and Drug Administration's "Mini-Sentinel" project, a pilot designed to inform and facilitate an active surveillance system for monitoring FDA-regulated medical products.
