PCCA Sponsors American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Policy Forums in Three Texas Cities

PCCA will sponsor the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network's (ACS (News - Alert) CAN) second annual Texas Cancer Policy Forum series in Fort Worth, Austin and Houston, Texas, during October. Titled "The Promise of Research: Personalized Cancer Care," these events will unite key leaders and decision makers in business, healthcare and government to hear about the latest advances in cancer research, including the potential of personalized cancer care. The events are free and open to the public. Reservations are requested.

The Fort Worth event is scheduled October 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Moncrief Cancer Institute, 400 West Magnolia Avenue. The featured speakers are David Gerber, M.D., associate professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern, a lung cancer specialist who works in research and clinical trials and co-director of the UT Southwestern Experimental Therapeutics Program, which aims to identify novel targets for tumor targeting, to perform laboratory testing of new treatment strategies and to develop new biomarkers and clinical trials; and United States Representative Joe Barton (Arlington, TX), a senior Republican and chairman emeritus of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the committee with responsibility for commerce, public health and marketplace interests.

The Austin event is scheduled October 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Texas Capitol Auditorium at the State Preservation Board, 201 East 14th Street. The featured speakers are Matthew McManus, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Asuragen, an Austin-based molecular diagnostics company focused on better patient-management in oncology and genetic disorders through clinical testing; United States Representative Michael McCaul (Austin, TX), who serves as chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, authored the Creating Hope Act, which created incentives for pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments for pediatric cancer patients. McCaul co-chairs the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, which he founded shortly after he was first elected to Congress; and Texas State Representative Jim Keffer, who serves as chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee. Keffer was the author of a bill that proposed the creation of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

The Houston event is scheduled October 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn NRG/Medical Center, 8111 Kirby Drive. The featured speakers are Gordon Mills, M.D., chairman of the Department of Systems Biology, chief of the Section of Molecular Therapeutics and professor of Medicine and Immunology and Anne Rife Cox (News - Alert) Chair in Gynecology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Mills has been the principal investigator, a co-investigator or the project director for a long list of funded research projects on a wide variety of subjects in the United States and Canada; and United States Representative Pete Olson (News - Alert) (Sugar Land, TX), a senior Republican and member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the committee with responsibility for commerce, public health and marketplace interests.

Aaron Lopez, senior director of Public Affairs for PCCA, said, "Compounding pharmacy is at the leading edge of developing and delivering personalized care to people and their pets who are unable to take manufactured drugs for a variety of reasons. Sponsoring these events is a natural fit for our company."
