America's Movie Theaters Transform Into Video Game Arenas With Launch Of Super League Gaming

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Super League Gaming, the world's first in-theater video game league that turns movie theaters across the country into competitive, multiplayer gaming arenas for players of all ages, is launching its first official Super League National Championship. The six-week league will be live in over 30 major cities, beginning with a special Los Angeles Red Carpet Premiere hosted by YouTube gaming celebrities CaptainSparklez and ParkerGames on Sept. 16.

Super League Gaming brings the world of Minecraft to movie theaters.

Over 10,000 excited players and Minecraft fans poured into theaters across the nation this summer during Super League's limited pre-launch tour to experience the future of gaming and eSports, and the sold-out phenomenon has now opened signups for its first official Fall League beginning the week of Oct. 6 at www.SuperLeague.com.

For the first time ever, gamers will play Minecraft at their local AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters in teams, competing on their devices and with a customized, aerial third-person view on the big screen. Super League's proprietary technology allows over a hundred gamers to gather in a single cinema to play side-by-side, while merging all players onto one, live-action movie screen for an entirely new and interactive gameplay experience.

Individual players and teams will compete during six-week, after-school league sessions to climb the national leaderboard and vie for the coveted national championship trophy, $10,000 scholarship and the title of Super League: Minecraft National Champion.

"We're a group of dads who wanted tomake gaming more social and communal for our own kids," says Super League Gaming Co-Founder and Chief Visionary John Miller. "Video games don't have to be a solitary experience, and watching other people play is only half the fun. Playing face-to-face with a hundred or so other people is a really special experience. We think this is where gaming is headed, and movie theaters are a natural fit."

Super League's custom designed Minecraft map, Crystal Crater, adapts the popular building game to allow kids to work on teams, effectively strategize with one another, and explore special environments where they can collaborate as they create sophisticated 3D sculptures. The company also plans to add additional video games in the coming months.

"Our theaters are an entertainment destination, a place for people to interact and share an experience," says Sean Gamble, Cinemark CFO. "Super League brings a whole new energy to our theaters and our investment in the company reflects our enthusiasm and belief that these types of events are additive to our core theatrical business."

CaptainSparklez, one of YouTube's biggest Minecraft celebrities with over 8.6 million subscribers, is a founding gamer among the Super League team and will be hosting the Sept. 16 red carpet premiere along with fellow Minecraft YouTube celebrity and Super League digital star ParkerGames.

"We remembered what it was like to play in arcades. Those were some of our most special memories as kids and we wanted to bring some of that magic back to gaming," says Super League President and COO, Brett Morris. "Super League creates those moments again - moments where you connect with other people playing the games you love, making new friends, competing for the prize and simply having fun."

Super League's Fall Premiere Event hosted by CaptainSparklez and ParkerGames will take place from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Cinemark Playa Vista and XD Theater. Media is invited to come learn more about the Fall League and witness Super League Gaming in action as they watch gamers and teams play live and in-theater. Super League's founding team will also be onsite and available for interviews. For press passes and interview requests please email Jasmine ([email protected]).
