Compass Networks Joins the Consortium of On-Board Optics (COBO)

Compass Networks, a next-generation networking company and icPhotonics™ chipset pioneer, today announced its membership and participation in the Consortium of On-Board Optics (COBO). The Consortium for On Board Optics develops interoperable specifications to lower power consumption and increase bandwidth for optics within enterprises and data centers.

"We are pleased to have chip companies that provide solutions for 100G and 400G join the consortium," said Brad Booth, chair of COBO. "CMOS semiconductors will continue to play a major role as the COBO ecosystem develops for cloud and enterprise datacenters."

The goal of COBO is to develop a technology rodmap and specifications for on-board optics. Integrating the optical modules within the networking equipment will significantly decrease power and cost, while increasing faceplate bandwidth.

Compass (News - Alert) Networks will work with other industry leaders in defining standards that will reduce power consumption and faceplate area in data center networking equipment. Compass Networks' icPhotonics™ technology can be combined directly with CMOS chips, offering incredible bandwidth density and connectivity options. "We feel there's great benefit in combining the attributes of icPhotonics™ and Compass Networks' technology know-how on bringing light directly onto a processor as a contribution to the industry standardization efforts of the COBO team," said Matt Bross (News - Alert), Chairman and CEO of Compass Networks.
