Cord Project Has The World Talking With Its Voice Messaging App

NEW YORK, Aug. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cord Project Inc., the New York based startup founded by former Googlers, Jeff Baxter and Thomas Gayno, announced today the official launch of version 2.0 of their flagship app, Cord, on both Android and iOS. Cord was first released in December 2014 and since has grown to half a million users around the world.

Cord 2.0 is adding many new social features to its messaging service, such as channels and voice filters. Channels, the most significant newly released feature, are audio chat rooms organized around interests and locations that anyone can join or create. More private than video, but more personal than text, voice is a great way to initiate a conversation.

"Channels are a great way to bring more socializing into our messaging platform," explains Jeff Baxter, Creative Director and Co-founder of Cord Project. "You can find and chat with a huge group in a channel, then easily switch to private messaging which Cord is also great for. This new feature might be used by new moms in Brooklyn sharing tips, fans of a TV show, beatboxing contests, or just a place to say 'hi' to people around the world." 

More than 2 years worth of voice have been shared through Cord's servers since the beginning of the year. People are using it for more than just everyday messaging. Whether it's for telling a joke or singing a song, over two thirds of Cord's users say they love using voice messaging because it's more fun than text. 

"Since they're not limited by text, our users unleash their creativity," says Co-Founder and CEO, Thomas Gayno. "We wanted a way for everyone to have even more fun and voice filters seemed to be an obvious choice." From now on, when Cord users record a message using the mic button, they will have the option to customize their voice with a variety of filters from a high-pitched bird to an alien.

With countries like China and Argentina, where voice messages are quickly replacing texts (85% of Cord users are outside the US), great new wearables and connected devices like Amazon Echo and Apple Watch, and the rapid growth of their voice-first platform, the Cord Project team has never been more excited.
