CEA Applauds Taiwan's Decision to Join ITA ExpansionThe following statement is attributed to Sage Chandler, vice president of international trade, Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA)®, regarding the government of Taiwan's notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the country intends to join the Information Technology Agreement (ITA (News - Alert)) expansion: "We thank the government of Taiwan for all its hard work to make ITA expansion a reality. Taiwanese negotiators worked tirelessly to gain domestic support and foreign offices, such as TECRO in Washington, provided vital communication between the global tech industry and Taipei. "The world's consumers will benefit from lower tariffs on products ranging from life-saving medical devices to audio-video (AV). Among the key product sectors involved, tariffs on AV products such as videogame consoles and loudspeakers, as well as solid-state drives and next-generation semiconductors, would fall from as high as 30 percent to zero. "Almost 20 years after implementation, the ITA is very much in need of an update. The agreement's expansion is now on track for conclusion by the Nairobi trade ministerial in December and implementation in July of next year."
