Derek Lin Joins Exabeam to Unite Data Science with Threat Detection

Exabeam, the leader in user behavior analytics for security, today announced the hiring of Derek Lin, a seasoned data scientist with more than 20 years of experience in the cybersecurity industry. Lin joins Exabeam as the company's inaugural chief data scientist. Prior to joining Exabeam, Lin led data science teams at RSA (News - Alert) and Pivotal Inc. During his time at RSA, Lin led research in fraud, malware and insider threat detection. He has filed and obtained several patents for his research.

Lin is a well-known data scientist in the general behavior modeling space with significant experience working on enterprise security applications. Over the past few years, Lin has worked with large enterprises to build in-house applications for insider threat detection using advanced machine learning models. At Exabeam, he will lead the security analyst and data scientist teams to build a solution to serve enterprises that do not have the means to build in-house data science tools. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from University of Southern California.

"Derek's pedigree as a researcher and his hands-on experience are a powerful combination and a perfect fit for the role of a chief data scientist," said Nir Polak, CEO of Exabeam. "It's rare to be able to add someone to the team that is a data scientist and also has a wealth of experience in cybersecurity. These two perspectives enable Derek to help our customers leverage user behavior analytics to address some of security's hardest problems."

Exabeam continues to attract cybersecurity talent from across the industry, including the hiring of executives from Splunk, HP ArcSight (News - Alert) and Sumo Logic to join Imperva alumni and Exabeam co-founders Nir Polak, CEO, and Sylvain Gil, vice president of products. In addition to bolstering its team with top talent, Exabeam is gaining consistent market traction, being named to the Gartner (News - Alert) "Cool Vendor" list in May and announcing dployments in more than 50 customer sites in June. The Exabeam solution applies user behavior intelligence and enables IT security teams to leverage SIEM data and quickly identify stolen identity-based attacks in real time, and is now available in version 1.7.

"For years, I have advocated that security is a big data problem that requires an infrastructure for massive storage, efficient querying, and data science library support," said Derek Lin, Exabeam's chief data scientist. "The problem, however, is that data scientists and security analysts rarely speak the same language. At Exabeam, I am joining a company where these teams already work side by side to interpret meanings from recorded events in a sea of data. This is a great opportunity to continue to unite these two teams and build an even better user behavior analytics solution for the enterprise industry."
