Medline Expands Collaboration with Cloud-Based Software Provider Brightree to Improve Patient Data Accuracy for Home Care and Hospice Clinicians

In 2013, more than 8 million people in the country received long-term care support. By the year 2050, that number is expected to grow to approximately 50 million. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), home health caregivers work more hours than nurses in almost any other care setting. In addition to providing direct care, they spend a tremendous amount of time on paperwork. In fact, an American Hospital Association study shows that one hour of patient care requires 48 minutes of paperwork for home care nurses.

In order to ensure patients are accurately receiving products, it is critical for caregivers to have an efficient solution for maintaining patient data when ordering products electronically. To help improve accuracy during the online ordering process and ultimately help clinicians provide better care to their patients, Medline has expanded its existing partnership with Brightree®, the leading provider of cloud-based clinical, business management and billing software solutions for the post-acute care industry, to bring a new supply interface to the market for licensed home health and hospice dealers.

"We are always looking for ways to better understand our customers' needs and create solutions that help clinicians perform at their very best," says Mike Lee, president, homecare sales division, Medline. "Through this new interface expansion, we aim to help address common patient data entry challenges by making sure patients receive the right products when and where they need them."

With the interface, caregivers will only need to enter in patient data once rather than each time when ordering products.

"We are excited about our partnership with Medline, as we are always striving to find ways to help bring more operational efficiency to our home health and hospice customers," states Lori Jones, executive vice president and general manager of home health and hospice for Brightree. "This new interface streamlines a clinician's process and allows them to focus more time on what is most important, their patients."

Medline and Brightree have coordinated a pilot program among home health care agencies and hospices nationwide. One of the trial participants is Massachusetts-based Natick Visiting Nurse Association, a home health agency with an average daily census of 250. Wendy Cofran, the agency's chief information officer says, "Data accuracy is a critical component of ordering medical supplies. Making the ordering process easier for clinicians allows for patient supplies to be replenished more quickly, reducing anxiety of patients, family members and caregivers. This collaboration between Medline and Brightree highlights two major forces in the post-acute industry working together to become more integrated so that clients like us can provide better and more cost effective care to our patients."
