American Family Insurance Encourages Use of Smart Home Technology to Protect Homes

As part of its commitment to innovation that benefits customers, American Family Insurance is introducing a new discount to encourage the use of smart home devices to help prevent tragedies and losses before they happen.

These devices use smart technology to monitor potential risks and allow users to check statuses, make adjustments and receive alerts, even when not at home, via a smart phone or tablet. Examples of home devices include smart fire/smoke detectors, smart thermostats, water leak detectors and anti-theft systems.

"American Family wants to not only help customers recover from accidents and tragedies, we want to partner with them to take a more proactive role in protecting the things they value," said Julie Schaubroeck, American Family Insurance product and field marketing director. "By using these devices, they are demonstrating a commitment to potentially preventing these damaging events, and we want to reward them for practicing these safe habits."

American Family is putting a strong focus on innovative technology and home automation. Last year, the company partnered with Microsoft (News - Alert) Corp. to launch a unique business accelerator for startups focused on home automation. The goal of the accelerator was to assist the next generation of startups to create advancements to help lead to safer and smarter homes. Just announced earlier this month was a partnership with Nest for a new program to provide Nest Protect smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at no cost to homeowners policyholders in Minnesota.

Those who use smart home devices will be eligible for the Proactive Home Protection five percent discount on their homeowners, renters or condo policies. The discount is in addition to any other policy discounts customers are eligible for.

The discount is currently available in 15 of American Family's 19 operating states and will be available in all 19 states in August. Customers can contact their American Family Insurance agent for information about eligibility and other details.
