Outside Hacks Mixes Music + Tech

This year celebrates the 3rd annual Outside Hacks, the annual hackathon put on by the premiere music and arts festival, Outside Lands. The event will take place on July 11 - 12 at Weebly's brand new San Francisco Headquarters located in SoMa and applications to launch the next big App are still being accepted!

Outside Hacks will bring together engineers, designers, and aficionados of music, art, and technology to build the next great App that enhances the experience for Artists and/or Fans at this years Outside Lands. Winners will be given VIP treatment at this year's festival, including having their App go live with the official Outside Lands App - a one of a kind opportunity that will put them alongside the best in the business across art, music, and technology.

"I always love seeing what emerges from a hackathon - there's something special about bringing a group of passionate people together and challenging them to build something," said David Rusenko, co-founder and CEO of Weebly. "We're incredibly excited to be hosting Outside Hacks again this year at our brand new office, and I can't wait to see what this year's group of developers and designers create!"

Travis Laurendine, whose company CODEMKRS helps host Outside Hacks explains that "Outside Hacks was conceived to bridge the gap between the best music and arts festival in San Francisco with the thriving innovation ecosystem in Silicon Valley. Every year I'm beyond impressed with the talent level of the participants and the innovative products that are created. Anything that can be imagined can be created in just 24 hours today and we give these talented hackers a platform to showcase their skills."

Last year's Grand Prize went to Nithi Narayanan, Maya Holikatti, and Claire Chiu - a group of high school girls from #GirlsWhoCode who created Outside Rides - an App that allowed festival attendees to coordinate rides with other people at the event to save time, and the environment. It was a fresh idea that had such great potential, Uber eventually built something incredibly similar and is nowknown as uberPOOL.

The trio was a breakout success, and all three girls had nothing but positive things to say about the experience:

"Even attending Outside Hacks was a huge step out of the comfort zone for me, but a rewarding one. I got to meet new people who inspire me to this day, create something that would better society, and most importantly learn new things."

-- Claire Chiu

"Outside Hacks was definitely a learning experience. It offered a very new, different kind of experience for me, but I met some great people and learned more than I probably could've anywhere else."

-- Nithi Narayanan

"It was my first hackathon and couldn't have had a better experience. Everyone was kind and encouraging and food was amazing"

-- Maya Holikatti

Outside Hacks features some of the most talented young people in Silicon Valley and this year will include Ryan Orbuch & Jonah Grant who will be joining last years winning teams as developers and designers in residence. They'll be on hand to help teams finish their apps on time and to work on special projects with Outside Lands artists. Who knows what million dollar idea will come from this year's hackathon!
