Docker Announces General Availability of Comprehensive Commercial Solutions

DOCKERCON - Docker, the organization behind the open platform for distributed applications, today announced general availability and strong early customer adoption of Docker's commercial solutions. To assure customers' success in the deployment of business-critical Dockerized distributed applications, these solutions integrate support services, certified Docker Engines and management tools. Customers have the flexibility to choose between on-premises or cloud-based configurations as well as varying levels of support. The solutions are immediately available directly from Docker as well as Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Microsoft (News - Alert), with subscriptions starting at $150 per month.

Building on Docker Hub Registry, available since June 2014, the new Docker Trusted Registry (DTR) is an on-premises registry for Docker container images that provides an on-premises option for storing and sharing Docker images. A highly-available registry server that provides LDAP and Active Directory integration with existing authentication systems, it also offers role-based access control (RBAC) and audit logs for authorization and compliance.

Launched in February this year, the DTR beta program attracted more than 800 organizations, more than half of the participating companies are in the Fortune 500 and are using Docker for multiple projects within their organizations. As a result of these evaluations, several new customers and major solution use cases have emerged for organizations of all sizes across all vertical markets.

"Since its launch at DockerCon SF last June, Docker Hub has attracted hundreds of thousands of users and tens of thousands of organizations," said Ben Golub, CEO of Docker. "These users and organizations have given us valuable feedback on the nature of the commercial solutions they would like to see from us to support their deployment of business-critical distributed applications. We have used this feedback as well as feedback from our Docker Trusted Registry beta program to define our commercial solutions for production environments in a way that creates confidence for leveraging Docker as a cornerstone technology and business partner."

Organizations Tap Docker to Speed Application Delivery

As Docker is increasingly being utilized in production environments, one of the most important aspects of the development process is that teams collaborate on the development, testing and management of an application to ensure portability, improve productivity, and accelerate deployment.

Organizations must have a reliable path to production for designers/developers/reporters who need to make their own technology choices on what can be extremely tight deadlines. Development teams use Docker to improve their Continuous Integration (CI) process by dockerizing their application from development to production.

Chris Buckley, Director of DevOps for Business Insider, will be speaking at DockerCon today to discuss how Docker is helping their development team improve their CI process.

Docker's 'Container-as-a-Service' Solution Delivers Agility to Devs and Control to Ops

Docker enables organizations to create a secure DevOps framework for application development teams as they evolve monolithic legacy applications into distributed applications running in the cloud. Companies use Docker to create a unified developer experience and provide a uniform set of tooling and shared microservices content.

"Using Docker Engines and the Docker Trusted Registry, we're already addressing mission-critical needs at a large federal agency," said Jarid Cottrell, chief technologist at global management consulting and technology firm Booz Allen Hamilton (News - Alert). "This collaboration brings incredible power to our open source, cloud and DevOps capabilities. We look forward to delivering the best of both organizations to the public sector and continuing to drive positive technological impact on a national level."

Large Financial Services Firm Uses Docker to Accelerate "Big Data" Analyses

The data analysts at this Fortune 500 financial services firm have historically used leading analytic tools o prototype new insights and build statistical models. To improve analyst productivity and innovation, the company embarked on a reinvention of the data technology stack by deploying a "big data" hub consisting of a centralized Hadoop Data Lake and a large suite of open source tools and software packages. The platform and engineering team needed a solution to enable fast prototyping of tools, isolate the workload in a contained environment and integrate it into a self-service portal. After evaluating different options, the team selected Docker to build an "Analytics Garage" for the enterprise. Creating a lightweight model based on Docker allows the analytics app to be portable to the data enabling the financial institution and any other organization working with "big data" to dramatically improve the feedback loop on their analytics models.

Industry-leading Partners Enable Ubiquitous Access to Docker's Commercial Solutions

Docker's commercial solutions, which include the Docker Trusted Registry, are immediately available directly from Docker as well as via three partners: AWS, IBM (News - Alert) and Microsoft.

IBM announced a unique reseller agreement for Docker Trusted Registry. IBM becomes the first to fully integrate the on-premise Docker Trusted Registry software with its flagship DevOps and Cloud offerings, beginning with IBM UrbanCode and IBM Pure Application Systems. Through this relationship, IBM is again enabling containers for enterprise production workloads in hybrid cloud deployment. Additionally, IBM announced the delivery of industry leading enterprise class containers, based on Docker, that make it easier for developers to deliver production applications across their hybrid environments.

"Our solutions are helping enterprises use the combined prowess of IBM and Docker technologies to create and manage a new generation of portable distributed applications that are rapidly composed of discrete interoperable Docker containers, have a dynamic life cycle, and can be deployed across the public cloud and on-premise cloud centers," said Dr. Angel Diaz, IBM Vice President of Cloud Architecture and Technology. "Through our partnership, which includes being a founding member of the Open Container Project, we are enabling innovation by giving developers abilities to work across hybrid clouds and integrating with both on-premises Docker Trusted Registry and cloud-based IBM Container services, making it easier to navigate any cloud development needs."

Today at DockerCon 2015, Microsoft demonstrated the first ever multi-platform distributed container application across Windows Server and Linux, offering application developers unprecedented choice and flexibility across Linux and Windows Server. In addition, today Microsoft also announced Visual Studio Online support for Docker and a new Azure Marketplace experience. These announcements are the latest examples of Microsoft's broad commitment to embracing Docker technology across the company's cloud platform to provide developers and organizations with a fully integrated container experience.

"As a result of our collaboration with Docker, we are working to deliver a broad set of capabilities across Microsoft that empower our customers to leverage Microsoft Azure, Windows Server Containers, Hyper-V Containers and more to build a new generation of distributed applications," said John Gossman, architect for Microsoft Azure. "We're pleased that Docker Trusted Registry VM image is now available in the Azure Marketplace to provide organizations with a private repository of Docker images. We also look forward to bringing to market the fruits of our joint efforts as we integrate Visual Studio Online with Docker Trusted Registry in the coming months."

Availability and Pricing

Docker's commercial solutions, available for both on-premises and cloud deployments, are immediately available from Docker directly or through its go-to-market partners Amazon Web Services, IBM and Microsoft. Subscription pricing begins at $150 per month.
