Carpathia Achieves DISA PA IL2 Provisional Authority for vCloud® Government Service provided by Carpathia™

DULLES, Va., June 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Carpathia, a QTS company and leading provider of trusted hybrid cloud and managed hosting, today announced that the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has granted a Department of Defense (DoD) Provisional Authorization (PA) allowing Carpathia to host DoD mission data up to Impact Level 2 (IL2) in a cloud environment.

Carpathia - A QTS Company

This means that VMware's vCloud® Government Service provided by Carpathia™, a FedRAMP compliant hybrid cloud service built on the award-winning VMware vSphere® platform, can now serve those DoD workloads.

A DoD PA serves as the foundation for the authorization process when using a Cloud Service Offering. Mission Owning Authorization Officials can leverage the PA, coupling this information with their assessment of the additional controls needed for their specific mission system/application, in determining overall mission risk as part of issuing an Authority to Operate (ATO).

DoD defines impact levels based on the sensitivity and risk associated with the data, which was used to establish the minimum protection and controls required. There are four impact levels: 2, 4, 5 and 6, with mndated protections increasing with each successive level. Impact Level 6 is for data classified as Secret.

Impact Level 2 is for Non-Controlled Unclassified Information that includes all data cleared for public release, as well as some DoD private unclassified information not designated as CUI or critical mission data, but the information requires some minimal level of access control.

"We are pleased to achieve this new level of DISA compliance for DoD systems," said Tim Burke, Carpathia's Federal Cloud Product Manager. "Carpathia will now host DoD workloads at IL2 on vCloud Government Service allowing the DoD to realize the benefits of using cloud solutions while addressing compliance in a consistent manner by leveraging a DoD approved common security and risk management baseline."
