Rates of new HIV cases and prevalence in both ouston/Harris County and the Houston EMA (News - Alert) continue to exceed rates both for Texas and the U.S. In 2012, there were 1,385 new diagnoses of HIV in the greater Houston area. Eighteen percent of residents with HIV are currently unaware of their infection and only half of those who are aware of their infection are retained in HIV care. Only 46% of diagnosed persons (or 37% of all people infected with HIV) have achieved a suppressed viral load. While African Americans and Hispanics account for 56.8% of the total Houston area population, they are 81.2% of all new HIV diagnoses and 73.5% of all people living with HIV. Consistent with national trends, newly diagnosed cases in the Houston Area tend to be male, African American or Hispanic, age 25 to 34, and MSM (male-to-male sexual activity).
