Global Shopal vs. Alibaba: Who Will Dominate the Cross-Border Online Shopping Industry for Chinese Consumers?

NEW YORK, June 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Earlier this week, Jack Ma, the Chairman of the Alibaba Group visited New York City and Chicago to share his plans of positioning Alibaba as the leading cross-border e-commerce solution, enabling China's 557 million Internet users to buy things from abroad. At the same time, a startup company called Global Shopal began finalizing the details for their upcoming launch in July 2015. It appears that both Global Shopal and Alibaba have the same target in mind.

Based in the United States, Global Shopal is a company dedicated to providing a new style of U.S. shopping experiences and cross-border shopping solutions to customers worldwide. Global Shopal will provide personal shopper and package-forwarding services to customers worldwide. They will also launch several B2C stores, selling baby, fashion, and lifestyle items directly to Chinese consumers. What is seemingly quite special of Global Shopal is the fact that they will partner up with professional personal shoppers and fashion icons to provide consumers with comprehensive U.S. shopping guides and tips.

"We want customers, regardless of where they are, to be able to shop for their favorite products from all around the world, starting from United States," said the founder of Global Shopal, Alyna Deng. "After our official launch n July, we strongly believe that Global Shopal will quickly make an unprecedented name for itself within the online shopping industries. We will be able to dominate the cross border shopping market by making the shopping information accessible and providing the easiest solutions to customers worldwide. Also by becoming an online U.S. retailer ourselves and selling products directly to customers, we will cater to the needs of Chinese consumers and differentiate ourselves from the competition."

Born and raised in China, Alyna Deng moved to the United States to study at Duke University, graduating one year earlier from high school with 1/55,000 placement in the citywide general exam. After graduating with double majors in Economics and Philosophy and Finance Concentration and awarded Dean's List with Distinction, Deng founded Global Shopal in May 2014. Since then, Deng has been extensively involved in the cross-border e-commerce industry.

According to EMarketer, cross-border purchases by online shoppers in China grew from under $2 billion in 2010, to over $20 billion in 2014. They predict that China's e-commerce market will become twice the size within five years alone.

Whether it is a start-up company like Global Shopal, or a larger corporation such as Alibaba, it seems that all of the top e-commerce players who understand Chinese markets are looking into new options such as cross-border shopping markets. However, it seems that companies within the United States seldom evaluate the opportunities within China, and Global Shopal is here to seize the opportunity.

While Jack Ma is inviting small and medium-sized U.S. businesses to sell with Alibaba to Chinese Customers, Global Shopal will soon be allowing customers to buy directly from the top retailers in the United States. On Alibaba, customers can visit a third-party marketplace and buy from random sellers. With Global Shopal, customers shop directly from the most popular online stores within the United States.
