Business Matchmaking Profiles Dr. Robert Nolan, Superpreneur

Business Matchmaking, a 10-year-old non-profit, has been studying changes in economic growth in key areas. In Southern California, low-profile communities like Playa Vista, Marina Del Rey, Westchester and Culver City have jumped to high visibility because of giant developments by Google, Hulu (News - Alert) and other superstars of the tech world. It is being called Silicon Beach and the newest arrivals have announced many thousands of new jobs. Skilled workers need a nice place to live.

There are 200,000 dentists in the country and California has more than New York and Texas combined. Dr. Robert Nolan started his career in the San Fernando Valley going door to door at age 6 selling whatever was offered on the back of comic books. At 10, he moved up to delivering papers, scorekeeping at a bowling alley and being a neighborhood gardener. His friends and colleagues agree that he was simply a natural entrepreneur.

In between jobs, he graduated from Grant High School in Los Angeles and then from California State University, Northridge and tried selling real estate. That did not work fo him and neither did his stint as a Porsche salesman. So, he switched career-gears and focused on the stability of practicing dentistry. He had already been rejected for dental school twice. But, finally UCLA's respected School of Dentistry accepted him.

David Taft was a Robert Nolan classmate who became his close friend, a successful dentist and then his partner in several real estate deals. "Robert has always been relentless. There are no clocks when he is in pursuit of the next deal. He combines smart, focused and timing to produce success," Taft says.

The "Nolanization" of the Westside of Los Angeles began well before the new high tech makeover the area is enjoying. Dr. Nolan began with a $10,000 investment in an apartment building in trendy Marina Del Rey, which was known to be a casual community and home to flight attendants and boating enthusiasts. Now, it has become part of a quartet of destinations for several of the high tech multinationals creating "Silicon Beach. "

Today, Robert Nolan is a true prince of property owning over 500 apartments, duplexes and homes personally or with partners, worth in excess of $135,000,000 in what brokers are calling the "hottest property sector" in Southern California. David Taft joined in many of those acquisitions and continues to be amazed at his partner's foresight and drive.

Meanwhile, the Westside communities where Nolan's properties dominate are bracing for the very best kind of invasion from the tech world - well paid workers. That should mean even more Nolan owned rental units will appear to house the huge new workforce.

Business Matchmaking is a non-profit company regularly compiling profiles and studies on entrepreneurial success.
