IEEE Software Defined Networks Initiative Tapped to Lead Conversations on Softwarization at International Communications Technology Conference

IEEE (News - Alert), the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced the IEEE Software Defined Networks (IEEE SDN) Initiative will participate in two separate events during CommunicAsia2015 Summit, the world's largest international communications and technology conference being held 2-5 June, 2015 at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

"There is a shift occurring in the character of telecommunications and ICT. SDN and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) are paradigms that are not just impacting telecom providers, technology vendors and other players of the related ecosystems. In fact, softwarization is a systemic trend that is also opening a new value-chain for various industries," said Antonio Manzalini, IEEE Member and Chair of the IEEE SDN Initiative, and Senior Manager, Strategy and Innovation for Telecom Italia. "We will join with the presenters at this important event to delve into the vital insights being made in both scientific and industrial progress providing a unique opportunity to accelerate innovation for the entire Internet communications industry."

IEEE Events at CommunicAsia2015 Summit:

  • Special session, the "IEEE SDN Initiative Briefing," to be held at 11 am on Wednesday 3 June in Room Hibiscus 3701B at the Marina Bay Sands - the discussion will range from the overall telecommunications transformation trend of softwarization and its impact on various industries, to how advancing softwarization will create new business models and value-chains for a digital society. Participants will also be introduced to the IEEE SDN Initiative and its activities to provide education, collaborate with industry, develop standards and lead events around this emerging technology area.
  • Panel discussion led by IEEE SDN Initiative Steering Committee Member, Eileen Healy, "Measuring the Impact of Virtualization o Wireless Network Developments," which will take place starting at 12:00 pm on Thursday 4 June - continuing the softwarization theme, panel topics will include how SDN and NFV are a game changer for wireless, their impact in service creation and delivery and how virtualization enables new business models while reducing costs.

The panelists include a diverse lineup of acknowledged wireless networking experts, including Prof. Thomas Magedanz, Director of the Competence Center for Next Generation Network Infrastructures, Fraunhofer (News - Alert) Institute FOKUS; Dr John Naylon, CTO and Co-Founder, Cambridge Broadband Networks Ltd (CBNL); and a representative of the FTTH Council, APAC.

The IEEE SDN Initiative is a program of the IEEE Future Directions Committee, designed to develop and share educational tools, events and content for emerging technologies.
