OpenStack Board Approves Parallels as Gold Member of the Foundation

The Board of Directors of the OpenStack Foundation approved Parallels as the newest Gold Member of the Foundation during its meeting at the OpenStack Summit, taking place this week in Vancouver.

Parallels recently rebranded its Service Provider business unit as Odin and will assume the Gold membership under the Odin brand.

Odin's contributions to the OpenStack community have focused on two distinct areas: improving the integration of containers virtualization within the OpenStack compute layer and working within the community to help optimize OpenStack orchestration for the service provider industry. By modernizing their infrastructure with the latest in container virtualization, service providers will be better able to capitalize on the monetary opportunity that emerging container-dependent technologies represent. The adoption of these technologies within OpenStack will improve the ability of service providers to provide OpenStack-based IaaS, PaaS and SaaS (News - Alert).

"Odin is honored to be elected a Gold member of the OpenStack Foundation," said James Bottomley, chief technology officer, Virtualization, Odin. "We're committed to bringing OpenStack to hosting providers and working closely with the community to extend the reach and utility of container-based systems."

"The global web hosting market is a huge opportunity for OpenStack as traditional hosting providers transition to cloud," said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation. "Odin has a strong position in this market, and we look forward to seeing the long term impact of their investments in OpenStack."

Odin provides software that powers the cloud ecosystem, from small and local hosters to some of the world's largest telecommunications providers. Odin delivers industry expertise, a catalog of in-demand cloud applications, and the most comprehensive selection of software including web server management, server virtualization, provisioning, and billing automation. With offices in 15 countries, Odin supports more than 10,000 service providers in delivering applications and cloud services to more than 10 million SMBs.

Foundation membership is limited to 24 Gold Members, who vote annually to select eight Board Directors representing the class. In addition to Odin, current Gold members are Aptira, CCAT, Cisco, Dell, DreamHost, EMC, Ericsson, Hitachi, Huawei (News - Alert), Juniper Networks, Mirantis, NEC, NetApp, Piston, Symantec and Yahoo!.

OpenStack is supported by a large and growing ecosystem of technology leaders and users contributing to the software and building products and services to help organizations adopt the software platform. Broad industry support is both critical to the evolution and maturation of the software platform, as well as an important benefit for users who have a choice of vendors and consumption models represented in the OpenStack Marketplace.
