Comcast Business Expands Fiber Network to Businesses Moving into Portland's Central Eastside

Comcast Business today announced that its full portfolio of Ethernet services is now available to businesses in Portland's Central Eastside, a district of the city currently undergoing growth as companies take advantage of the area's distinctive warehouses and industrial buildings. Through the expansion of Comcast's (News - Alert) Ethernet network, local businesses now have access to bandwidth of up to 10 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) and services specifically designed to help companies of all sizes access fast, reliable Internet service or connect multiple locations together or to an offsite data center.

"As more and more businesses flock to the Central Eastside of Portland to take advantage of the unique environment being developed there, access to a strong technology infrastructure will be just as necessary as having access to traditional utilities that companies of all kinds rely upon to do business effectively," said Skip Newberry, president, Technology Association of Oregon. "Many of the existing buildings in the area are being repurposed for a variety of commercial uses by tech and digital firms and these companies will be just as interested in connecting with their customers reliably via services like Comcast's Ethernet as they are by the district's centralized location and proximity to downtown Portland."

Portland's Central Eastside is home to more than 17,000 jobs in industrial sectors such as manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and industrial services that can benefit from the efficiency and reliability that fiber services can provide as an alternative to the traditional copper-based infrastructure that is currently available in the area. With this expansion, businesses residing in the area will have access to four different types of Comcast Business Ethernet services, including:

  • Ethernet Dedicated Internet - continuous, high-bandwidth connectivity between customers' Local Area Networks (LANs) and the public Internet.
  • Ethernet Network Service - multipont-to-multipoint connectivity to connect organizations with high-bandwidth requirements and multiple locations across Comcast's network.
  • Ethernet Private Line - point-to-point connectivity between two customer sites for bandwidth-intensive applications.
  • Ethernet Virtual Private Line - a point-to-multipoint connection that allows customers to tailor bandwidth, performance characteristics and cost to meet the needs of their applications.

"The revitalization of the Central Eastside exemplifies the demand we are seeing across the country for well-connected office space that allows companies to choose locations that best fit their unique needs, equipped with the services required for them to grow," said David Brown (News - Alert), vice president for Comcast Business. "In today's business environment, companies in every industry need the connectivity that Ethernet services can provide, allowing them to operate more efficiently and to easily increase their bandwidth as needs evolve."

All of Comcast's multi-gigabit Ethernet services are delivered over an advanced network that spans 140,000 miles across 39 states and the District of Columbia. Serving 20 of the top 25 U.S. markets, Comcast's network features a 100 Gbps backbone and expanded local footprint through Ethernet over HFC. Bandwidth (News - Alert) is available up to 10 Gbps and can be scaled in increments and offered in three different classes of service, backed by strict service level agreements and monitored 24x7x365 from Comcast's dedicated Network Operations Centers. Comcast was the first service provider in the world to offer Metro Ethernet Forum CE 2.0 certified Ethernet services and was also the first service provider to achieve all three of the previous CE 1.0 certifications (MEF (News - Alert) 9, 14 and 18).

Comcast Business recently received four Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Ethernet Excellence Awards, including the prestigious Best Service of the Year for North America. Comcast Business was also named the fastest-growing company ranked on Vertical Systems Group's 2014 U.S. Carrier Ethernet LEADERBOARD for the second year in a row.
