Extension Healthcare Celebrates Nurses and Its Clinical Solutions Team During ANA's National Nurses Week

Extension Healthcare, an alarm middleware and patient safety company, today announced its participation in National Nurses Week. From May 6-12, 2015 Extension will join the healthcare community in celebrating frontline nursing heroes who devote their lives to improving the lives of others including the fifteen clinical associates who comprise the Extension Clinical Solutions Team.

Extension's Clinical Solutions Team plays a key role in providing education and alarm and alert safety and collaboration solutions to hospitals and their nursing peers as they navigate The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal on Clinical Alarms. The deadline for meeting TJC's requirements is January 1, 2016 - just 8 months away.

"We have stressed the importance of hospitals looking beyond medical devices as they develop policies and procedures to reduce nursing interruptions," said Mary Jahrsdoerfer, PhD, RN and Chief Nursing Officer at Extension Healthcare. "Our Clinical Solutions Team is the largest in the industry and we understand firsthand the interruption fatigue that results when multiple clinical systems and medical devices are competing for nurses' attention."

During National Nurses Week Extension is also soliciting feedback from nurses by requesting participation in a quick, 3-question survey that will help it further determine what types of tools frontline nurses need to improve response times to patient events and quality of care. Respondents will receive a $15 Starbucks gift card just for participating.

"Nurses know that interruptions include medical device alarms, nurse call alerts, EHR alerts like lab result and STAT order notifications, text messages, and phone calls from other clinicians to name a few," continued Jahrsdoerfer. "A comprehensive interruption management strategy must take into account the full spectrum of nursing distractions, use advanced rules to determine if alarms and alerts are actionable, send contextual notifications to appropriate care team members, and provide event response options like patient-centric texting to ensure a timely and organized response to patient events."

Extension is also giving away a $100 Visa gift card to a respondent selected at random with the best response to @ExtensionHealth's #NursesRock Twitter (News - Alert) contest for National #NursesWeek. See official guidelines.
