INTERPHEX 2015 Showcases Future of Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Innovation in New York City

International Pharmaceutical Expo (INTERPHEX), the premier pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical event dedicated to innovation, technology and knowledge, sponsored by the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), today announced that its 2015 event was lauded by attendees and exhibitors as a resounding success. Attendees gathered to see firsthand more than 1,200 exhibiting brands and new cutting-edge educational programming provided at the PDA Learning Center and the INTERPHEX Connects Innovation Stages. INTERPHEX 2015, held April 21-23 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, drew 14 percent more pharmaceutical engineering professionals over the previous year.

Key Themes Demonstrated at INTERPHEX 2015

Paul Knight, analyst and managing director of Life Sciences Technology for investment firm Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, noted that single-use systems and biotherapeutics were hot topics at INTERPHEX 2015. "This year's INTERPHEX was one of the highest levels of activity I've seen in a decade," he said. "Single-use technology is transforming the industry, and the resurgence in biotechnology capital raising and stronger pharmaceutical spending will provide a decade of faster growth for the industry."

While multi-use stainless steel has long been the standard for material containment in pharmaceutical production, single-use technology such as disposable liner systems are on the rise as processors look to take advantage of cost and time savings, and reduce the issues of cross contamination. At INTERPHEX 2015, exhibitors such as Thermo Fisher Scientific, EMD Millipore and Pall Life Sciences showcased a number of single-use and flexible facilities technologies at their respective booths.

Oral solid dosage (OSD) forms continue to be a common and convenient method of drug delivery. On the pharmaceutical manufacturing front, Fette Compacting showcased its new FE75 double-sided rotary press that can produce more than 1.6 million tablets per hour. At INTERPHEX 2015, the company's FE series of tablet presses were showcased together for the first time in North America. KORSCH America also launched the XT600 high-speed double rotary press, offering a new standard in high-volume production, while L. B. Bohle showcased a fleet of tablet coaters from laboratory through pilot to production scale.

Other themes underscored at INTERPHEX 2015 included modular aseptic barrier isolation, which was shown by SKAN US, as well as biotherapeutics from Thermo Fisher Scientific, EMD Millipore, GE Healthcare Life Sciences and Repligen.

"INTERPHEX 2015 was our largest exhibition of new technology to date," said Ed Several, Senior Vice President and General Manager, INTERPHEX. "This year's INTERPHEX event continued the tradition of bringing together key industry leaders to share knowledge, innovation and experiences to maximize efficiency, enhance product quality, ensure compliance and improve the quality of, and access to, key therapeutic indications worldwide. INTERPHEX 2015 was a tremendous success, and we look forward to an even bigger and better show in 2016."

IPS-Led Technologies Tours

IPS, in partnership with Pharmaceutical Processing, hosted a number of Technology Tours during INTERPHEX for the fifth consecutive year. INTERPHEX 2015 provided IPS with a unique venue to show its customers firsthand the latest technologies and equipment that can improve their operations. "INTERPHEX gave us an opportunity to meet with many of our pharmaceutical clients in one location, saving us four weeks of travel time," said Sterling Kline, Vice President of IPS (Integrated Project Services). "INTERPHEX continues to be the best and most important conference in North America for pharmaceutical manufacturing."

The following are additional key highlights from INTERPHEX 2015:

  • INTERPHEX expanded its show footprint to accommodate a considerable increase in cutting-edge technologies, products and value-added services to be showcased at the 2015 event. More than 30 leading technology suppliers decided to expand their exhibit space and bring more, new technology and equipment to the show floor.
  • SKAN US, Inc., a subsidiary of SKAN AG Switzerland and the world's largest provider of isolator technology, showcased its flexible Pharmaceutical Safety Isolator L-Flange System (PSI-L) at INTERPHEX. "We made a significant investment in the size of our exhibition space for INTERPHEX 2015 and couldn't be more pleased," said Larry Cabeceiras, President, SKAN US. "Traffic at our booth was non-stop during the first two days as many attendees participated in our first-ever SKAN Engineering Olympics, which was the brainchild of Jim Spolyar, the original founder of SKAN US. This year's event was the best INTERPHEX we have ever experienced at SKAN!"
  • New for 2015, INTERPHEX Live was presented right on the show floor and enabled industry professionals to gain valuable insights on a variety of topics such as modularity, biosimilars, cold chain management, terminal sterilization and more. Both attendees and exhibitors had the opportunity to view 22 presentations and panels live on the show floor studio, broadcast throughout the show floor and recorded for "on-demand" viewing post-event.
  • The first-ever Fraser Advanced Information Systems 3D Printing Pavilion introduced INTERPHEX attendees to 3D printing equipment, materials and applications that leverage this emerging business model for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. The Pavilion featured speakers and exhibitors discussing and demonstrating current 3D printing capabilities and applications for improving drug development, commercialization and processing.
