Microsoft (News - Alert) Indoor Localization Competition 2015 was held April 13-15 in Seattle, WA, among 30+ organizations, including both universities and commercial companies from all over the world developing indoor positioning means for consumer, professional and industrial use. All participates were split in 2 categories: "Infrastructure-free" and "Infrastructure based" (like iBeacons).

SPIRIT Navigation infrastructure-free mobile indoor navigation software for standard smartphones provides reliable 1-meter accurate navigation and positioning in buildings based on sensor fusion. Exhibition building (about 2500 sq m) was used as the testing area by Microsoft judges. SPIRIT Navigation won the 2nd prize, right after European Atom Energy Agency, which showcased its 3D-camera with 360-view connected to a backpack with 10 kg of equipment and battery in infrastructure-free category.

SPIRIT Navigation licenses its mobile indoor navigation software engine that uses data from multiple smartphone sensors and does not require any (beacon) infrastructure to be installed in the facility. IndoorSpirit product concurrently uses multiple technologies including geomagnetic fingerprinting, pedestrian dead reckoning, WiFi (News - Alert) fingerprinting, map matching and more for heterogeneous data fusion. The indor navigation engine determines user's starting position automatically and reliably detects real-time 3D indoor positioning (including floor) in complex, dense and tall buildings with 1m accuracy. Software is easily integrated in LBS mobile applications for Android (News - Alert) and iOS.

SPIRIT Navigation Chairman Andrew Sviridenko said "Reliable and precise indoor navigation on smartphones will transform the way people move and act indoors in a similar way GPS transformed the way people navigate outdoors".

Dimitrios Lymberopoulos, the contest organizer from Microsoft said in its public speech at the closure of the contest that SPIRIT Navigation indoor software precision and reliability was amazing.
