Cloud File Security Fears Removed with WinMagic SecureDoc Cloud

(RSA (News - Alert) Conference 2015: Booth S2646) - WinMagic, Inc. today introduced security software that encrypts and manages how files are shared via cloud file sharing services such as Dropbox (News - Alert) or Box. SecureDoc Cloud leverages WinMagic's endpoint-focused key management capability to create an unparalleled offering; by giving full rights of encryption keys to the enterprise, the need for file-sharing passwords when combined with pre-boot authentication is eliminated and a user's encryption experience is completely transparent. As part of version 7.1 of the company's flagship product, SecureDoc, the new offering-called SecureDoc Cloud-is seamless to the end user and to workgroups, is easily managed by IT administrators, and removes serious security concerns related to cloud file sharing solutions.

WinMagic representatives are demonstrating SecureDoc 7.1 this week at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, where WinMagic is exhibiting in booth S2646. WinMagic today published an eBook highlighting customer perceptions regarding cloud file security and providing guidance for IT pros. The eBook, "What Consumers Believe About Cloud File Sharing & Why That's a Warning to IT Pros," is available from the WinMagic website: http://www.winmagic.com/cloud/ebook.

For almost two decades, WinMagic has made it easy to secure data with SecureDoc, a highly secure yet flexible solution that enables businesses to comply with privacy and security regulations by protecting sensitive data residing in laptops, desktops, servers and on removable media. SecureDoc provides customers with the most robust data encryption and security support in the industry, managing everything encryption-related within the enterprise.

"Other ways exist to encrypt files but these offerings leave data exposed and vulnerable during the copying process before the encryption actually occurs in the cloud and creates new roadblocks for users such as interfering with how work is done," sid Garry McCracken, Vice President, Technology at WinMagic. "SecureDoc Cloud encrypts files at the endpoint, guaranteeing internal company ownership of the encryption key, and offers features so that the encryption methods will not get in the way of how people work."

Key features and benefits of SecureDoc 7.1's approach to cloud file security include:

  • Full corporate control of encryption keys: SecureDoc Cloud encrypts files at the endpoint before they are saved in the cloud, meaning the company controls the encryption keys; these keys are assigned (and revoked) solely based on company policy. If the cloud service is compromised, or if a given cloud instance is moved to a different geographic location, the files remain encrypted and can be accessed at any given point in time.
  • Centralized key management: SecureDoc simplifies the management of encryption keys for cloud file security alongside other full disk encryption methods on a given endpoint.
  • Seamless end user experience: Whether users collaborate in workgroups, need to share files with trusted third parties, or must access files from various devices, SecureDoc Cloud enables a seamless experience without inserting a need for additional passwords when sharing within the enterprise.

The new offering from WinMagic dovetails research released from the company today showing that consumers might be too comfortable using cloud file sharing services, even though they pose inherent security risks. According to a WinMagic-commissioned survey conducted online by Harris Poll in February among over 2,000 US adults, of the nearly two thirds (64%) of respondents that consider themselves cloud storage users, approximately three-quarters are at least somewhat confident in the security of their data stored in the cloud.

"Given the high-profile incidents of cloud data theft, the fact that so many consumers are confident storing data in the cloud should be of concern to IT decision makers and IT administrators," explained Mark Hickman, COO, WinMagic. "To companies-your employees will use the cloud and aren't as concerned about the security of the data. Therefore, the time is now to invest in ways to encrypt that data."

SecureDoc 7.1 including SecureDoc Cloud, which is available now for Beta with a full release in October, includes many popular features in addition to the cloud file encryption capability. Customers have deployed the solution to manage BitLocker, a popular encryption method from Microsoft (News - Alert); BitLocker users that leverage SecureDoc are able to avoid the handful of issues related to encryption such as password-reset and user provisioning challenges. SecureDoc can also manage other encryption methods, such as Trusted Computer Group (TCG) Opal drives, Apple's (News - Alert) FileVault 2 and SecureDoc's own FIPS 140-2 certified software encryption. SecureDoc is therefore compatible with the most advanced storage approaches and common operating systems without experiencing any of the hassles typically associated with encryption management.

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of [MSLGROUP/WinMagic] from February 23-25, 2015 among 2,019 adults ages 18 and older. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
