The Spring 2015 report is based on data from more than 185 reviews written by business and content professionals.

The GridSM was created from G2 Crowd's software review platform, which compiles customer satisfaction as reported by users, along with vendor market presence as determined from public and social data, to rank products.

ECM systems organize and distribute unstructured content. They use organizational models to impose order on data, such as branching folder schema or metadata taxonomies, and make resources easy to find through search and advanced filtering.

ECMs often allow the collaborative creation of new documents, or ensure the integrity of data through versioning and audit trails. They can automate different business processes that route data to different individuals for document assembly, form creation, or approval, and actively or automatically attach metadata.

To qualify as a Leader, a product must receive a high customer satisfaction score and have substantial market presence. Perceptive Software was the only Leader named. High Performers have high customer satisfaction scores with a smaller market presence than Leaders. OnBase, Laserfiche, M-Files DMS and SpringCM were named High Performers. OnBase earned the highest overall customer satisfaction score.

Across all enterprise content maagement platforms, reviewers reported the product they use meets their requirements at an average rate of 84%, and on average reviewers said they were 77% likely to recommend the product they use.

Some highlights from the enterprise content management reviews on G2 Crowd:

"We enjoy the workflow features of Perceptive [Software]. We have clients at three universities comprising Undergraduate & Graduate Admissions, as well as Student Records. We designed pretty complicated business process flows in the backend of the software, but to the user, these appear very simple. Perceptive Content is very simple for the end users to use and utilize advanced features like workflow, digital signatures, and annotations."
- Christopher Matera, Senior Application Specialist for Document Imaging at University of Massachusetts

"Set it and forget it. I deployed OnBase years ago and barely have to touch it anymore. It is solid and needs little to no care and feeding. The workflow engine is extremely flexible and powerful and easy to configure...Document scanning, importing and retrieval is all very easy."
- Ted Stathakis, Director Software Applications at Del Taco LLC

"We went 'paperless' in our office several years ago by deploying Laserfiche. It not only freed up real estate by us being able to eliminate the need for filing cabinets, but it increased our ability and timeliness with finding documents. The search engine is amazing...Wonderful product!"
- Annette Lien, Administrator, Internal Ops & HR at Ensemble Real Estate Solutions

"[M-Files DMS is] easy to use, offers the latest technology, and [is] very modestly priced for the range of capabilities it offers. It can run both with a local client or via the web; hosted locally or in the cloud. It works with mobile devices like Droid, iPad and iPhones. It is easy to configure and deploy."
- Gary Bennett, Healthcare Consultant at NIH Research

"The system is intuitive. [SpringCM] is simply the easiest content management system out of the top...vendors in the ECM space. The basic search feature shows advanced functionality because the results show how likely the document is to produce what you were searching for. Adding metadata is incredibly easy because of the split screen: you can view the document and see the metadata fields at the same time so your metadata entry will be less likely to produce errors."
- Wesley Bullock, Consultant at Genentech

Of the nearly 40 software vendors listed in G2 Crowd's ECM category, the 11 ranked products each received 10 or more reviews to qualify for inclusion on the GridSM.

Satisfaction rankings are generated from the user reviews, and market presence is calculated from vendor size, market share, and social impact. Based on a combination of these scores, each software solution is categorized as a Leader, High Performer, Contender, or Niche.

Premium research access can be purchased on the site for $599.
