Cable Industry Marks a Year of Healthcare Customer Milestones at 2015 HIMSS Conference

Several of the nation's cable providers will return to the 2015 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition, showcasing the latest innovations in telecommunications technology, and highlighting new commercial achievements servicing healthcare organizations around the country.

The growth of cable companies in the healthcare market is a result of broad advances in the following areas: health system connectivity; the patient experience; diagnostic and treatment practices. Operators made substantial investments in 2014, extending their network capacity and reach to accommodate increasingly distributed healthcare organizations. Cable companies are also the driving force behind several healthcare-specific innovations including new patient-driven video services and sophisticated telemedicine trials.

"Healthcare is an ever-evolving environment and technology demands are on the rise - doctors and patients expect 24/7/365 reliability, accessibility, and continual innovation," said Don Detampel, EVP and President, Commercial Services, Charter Communications (News - Alert). "The cable industry is primed to meet these healthcare needs through our robust fiber networks, innovative TV solutions, and advanced voice capabilities."

A Year of Cable Milestones in Healthcare

Over the past year, cable companies have significantly expanded their healthcare services and deployments. The industry's notable achievements include the following:

Health System Connectivity

  • Comcast Business launched its new Ethernet @Home service and an initial deployment with Cooper University Health Care in 2014. Ethernet @Home delivers private, enterprise-class Ethernet connections to Cooper radiologists working remotely, and enables fast and secure access to medical images and other patient files from home.
  • li > Mediacom Business provided Ethernet services to Southern Illinois Healthcare in 2014 allowing neurologists to examine and diagnose stroke victims remotely in the critical time window right after a stroke has occurred.

Patient Experience

  • Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable Business Class announced a new HD Video for Healthcare service last year expressly designed for hospital patient rooms. The offering helps hospitals keep patients comfortable during their stay, delivering hundreds of high-definition channels, an interactive program guide, free on-demand content, and even the ability to pause, fast forward, and rewind live TV.
  • Cablevision launched a community video-on-demand channel in partnership with Winthrop-University Hospital for subscribers living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The station features health and wellness content including videos from medical experts at the hospital.

Innovations in Healthcare

  • Cox (News - Alert) Communications announced a landmark venture early this year with the Cleveland Clinic to develop in-home services for medical care. The Vivre Health joint venture aims to create solutions for remote doctor consultations as well as services that use monitoring equipment to enable physicians to track a patient's recovery after a hospital stay.
  • Spectrum Business, a division of Charter Communications, completed the final segment of an 87-mile fiber network in 2014 in partnership with OCHIN. Today, Spectrum Business services are enabling advanced capabilities for Sutter Coast Hospital on that fiber route including telemedicine and high-resolution medical image transfer.

Among the cable providers that will be present at this year's HIMSS conference are Comcast Business, Cox Business (News - Alert), Spectrum Business, and Time Warner Cable Business Class. Several cable executives will also participate in an Interoperability Showcase Education Theater Session titled "How Cable Keeps Healthcare Well Connected" on Tuesday, April 14 at 12:00pm. The Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) will be located at the Interoperability Showcase Kiosk.
