McKesson at HIMSS15: Focus Ahead on Streamlining the Transition to Value-Based Care

As healthcare continues to transform toward value-based care, McKesson Technology Solutions (News - Alert) (MTS) will put a spotlight on key health IT capabilities required for long-term success during the HIMSS15 Conference & Exhibition in Chicago next week. In addition to showcasing the latest innovations across its broad health IT portfolio, McKesson will focus on person-centered interoperability, analytics, and other solutions and services to support value-based care.

"As we focus on emerging models of healthcare, we believe the capabilities customers need to succeed go well beyond automating clinical workflow or the business office," said Pat Blake, group president, MTS (News - Alert). "As part of a global healthcare leader with customers across the spectrum of care, we bring a unique 360o perspective to help customers manage their current challenges while focusing on what's required for sustainable success."

McKesson will demonstrate its commitment to advancing interoperability and technology innovation in activities that include prototype demonstrations of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, or FHIR®. McKesson executives will be speaking at the HX360 conference, and the company will participate in the HIMSS15 Interoperability Showcase, where McKesson will share clinical documents, including images, with other participants.

"Being part of the Interoperability Showcase and the inaugural HX360 event provides unique opportunities to meet with likeminded individuals and collaborate with other leaders from health systems, IT professionals and innovators," said Erkan Akyuz, president, McKesson Imaging and Workflow solutions. "I am particularly excited about HX360 and the opportunity to engage with healthcare leaders on theirĀ strategies and goalsĀ to improve delivery by leveraging technologies as they prepare to transition from volume to value-based care."

In its booth, McKesson will host person-centered interoperability discussions and FHIR-based demonstrations involving multiple vendor systems, including McKesson's Paragon® electronic health record solution. With a focus on care managers' need for accurate medication lists, the demonstrations will show the real-time exchange of information using FHIR-enabled APIs and CommonWell Health Alliance® services. McKesson recently announced to its Paragn customers that they will not be charged for the current data exchange services or initial set-up, for an adoption period lasting until January 2018.

Arien Malec, vice president, Data Platform and Acquisition Tools, RelayHealth, will discuss McKesson's participation in the cross-industry development of FHIR as well as the advancement of CommonWell services. FHIR is Health Level 7's next-generation standard for consuming clinical data in real-time. FHIR standards are utilized by CommonWell, which enables cross-entity patient identity matching and linking, management of data access, and patient record locator and document query and retrieval.

In addition to interoperability, the use of analytics to manage capacity, risk and overall clinical and financial performance will be topics of discussion and demonstration. "Organizations of all sizes and shapes must manage quality, cost, risk, drug spend, workforce productivity and increasingly, population health," noted Jeff Felton, president, McKesson Connected Care & Analytics, MTS. "In addition, they must more closely align with physicians, not only to gain adoption of IT systems but also to optimize clinical and financial performance. Analytics combined with other solutions such as medical necessity criteria, revenue cycle management and practice management services will become increasingly important as value-based care and reimbursement become more prevalent."
