OmniTI Announces New Release of OmniOS

OmniTI, a leading provider of web infrastructures and applications for companies that require scalable, high-performance, mission critical solutions, today announced its newest release of OmniOS, the open-source operating system built for the Solaris, OpenSolaris and Illumos communities.

One of the key new elements this release brings is Long-Term Support (LTS), the second such release in OmniOS's history. This is significant because it gives users the confidence in stability of the software and peace of mind that the production software will be supported for years. OmniTI offers affordable OmniOS support at several levels and a discount is available for educational and non-profit institutions.

Arriving on the third anniversary of its initial release, OmniOS builds on Illumos to make a complete operating system solution. Illumos is the open-source legacy of the discontinued-by-Oracle (News - Alert) OpenSolaris project.

Key highlights of the release include:

  • Update of the Image Packaging System (IPS): easing administration, and improving security.
  • More components are now open-sourced.
  • ZFS improvements like:
    • Large Block Size support
    • Reduction in RAM (News - Alert) usage with ZFS cache devices.
  • Several improvements to hardware support including:
    • sTec S112x PCI-E SSDs.
    • Additional Gigabit Ethernet chipsets from Intel and Broadcom (News - Alert)
    • Emulex 16G Fiber Channel

"This release of OmniOS reinforces our commitment to providing an environment for our customers and our community where they can solve their technical problems," said Dan McDonald, OmniOS Engineering lead.

The newest version of OmniOS is immediately available for download at omnios.omniti.com.
