Medacta Previews Newest Surgical Innovations at American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting

Medacta International, the privately held, family-owned global leader in the design of innovative joint replacement and spine surgery products, will showcase its latest surgical innovations at this weeks American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting on March 24-28th in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Venetian Sands/Expo. Every year AAOS invites top orthopedic manufacturers, surgeons, and academics from around the world to discover the latest cutting-edge research, trends, and products across the orthopedic landscape. At booth #6233 Medacta will preview its newest designs, the GMK® Sphere Knee and GMK Efficiency Single Use Knee Instrumentation, as well as its proprietary MySpine Patient-Matched Technology.

"This is an exciting and dynamic year for Medacta and we're looking forward to sharing our 2015 product line with attendees at this year's AAOS annual meeting," said Francesco Siccardi, executive vice president of Medacta International. "Most exciting will be our new Global Medacta Knee (GMK) solutions on display, including our GMK Sphere designed to minimize Total Knee Replacement (TKR) recovery and increase patient satisfaction. We'll also preview our Efficiency Single Use instrumentation tools, which have the potential to streamline the TKR procedure itself while delivering benefits beyond the operating room."

Medacta products at this year's AAOS annual meeting include:

GMK Sphere: Providing TKR Patients Enhanced Stability and Satisfaction

The GMK® Sphere is Medacta's implant designed to deliver maximum functional stability to a replaced knee, with the goal of increasing Total Knee replacement (TKR) patient satisfaction and decreasing post-operative knee pain. The GMK Sphere provides a fully conforming medial compartment encompassing a unique anatomic and patellar tracking design, aiming to provide higher stability and enhanced patient satisfaction when compared to conventional knee designs.

The GMK Sphere was born out of a unique collaboration between Medacta and knee orthopedic technology pioneer Prof. Michael Freeman, Royal University Hospital/University College London, UK. The potential benefits of the GMK Sphere - including increased stability, optimized range of motion, and decreased levels of pain - exemplify Medacta's mission to provide safe and effective solutions that improve patient well being.

"Medacta's GMK Sphere knee is a welcomed advancement to the traditional design of TRK implants," said Prof. Freeman. "After three years of pre-launch clinical evaluation and with over 5,000 successful implants to date, Medacta's GMK Sphere sufficiently stabilizes the joint in a way that replicates the feeling of a patient's true knee."

GMK Efficiency Single Use Knee Instrumentation: Revolutionizing Total Knee Arthroplasty

Previewed at AAOS before its anticipated launch in the second half of this year, the GMK Efficiency system is Medacta's complete single-use instrument solution used to implant the GMK Primary or GMK Sphere. The use of Efficiency instrumentation has the potential to lower infection risk, decrease time and costs associated with the procedure, and optimize instrument management - providing significant benefits in the operating room, hospital supply chain and outpatient care clinics. In keeping with Medacta's holistic vision, the GMK Efficiency system aims to encourage sustainability throughout the healthcare continuum.

MySpine: Patient-Matched Technology Designed to Increase Surgical and Patient Outcomes

Recognized by Orthopedics This Week as a best New Technology (News - Alert) for Spine Care in 2014, MySpine received 510(k) clearance by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2014, and is the first product available in the U.S. to produce tailor-made patient-specific guides for the spine vertebrae utilizing proprietary CT scan algorithms and sophisticated 3-D medical printing technology. Designed to better help surgeons identify pedicle entry points, screw trajectories, and implant specifications, MySpine is intended to aid in accuracy, efficiency, and outcomes of spinal procedures. The first successful procedures utilizing MySpine in the US were completed in November 2014 at the Spine Institute of Idaho.
