Report: In Next Generation Sequencing, IT Systems a Competitive Advantage

NEW YORK, March 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Next generation sequencing (NGS) platforms can rapidly generate very high volumes of complex data, and the systems that can interpret that data are as important to their operation and the sequencers themselves, according to Kalorama Information.  Kalorama has identified more than 50 companies offering NGS-related information systems.  A detailed list is available in the firm's new report Next Generation Sequencing Markets 2015.

Kalorama Information says the market for sequencing systems including next generation models grew to 2.2 billion dollars in 2014, and is expected to continue to grow driving by the increasing use of the systems for clinical diagnostics.  A key aspect of the success and growing use of next generation sequencing has been the emergence of bioinformatics tools and solutions making it possible to analyze and interpret this data, and to generate a report that can be used by physicians.

"Initially, this process required days or weeks to generate results in a report," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information.  "As the field of next generation sequencing has moved towards and into clinical applications, there has been a need for bioinformatics solutions that can analyze and interpret the results much more rapidly."

Numerous companies have emerged to address various aspects of the bioinformatics needs of companies, clinical laboratories, and others doin next generation sequencing studies. Some bioinformatics solutions are targeted broadly for next generation sequencing, while others target more specific applications. Data storage is an important issue with these large data sets, and companies now cloud-based storage.  Bioinformatics solutions for next generation sequencing has become a very crowded field, as shown by the number of companies.

Among the offerings in NGS-IT noted by Kalorama:

  • Qiagen N.V. Data analysis solutions developed by CLC bio, a QIAGEN company that is profiled and listed separately.  Data interpretation solutions: Ingenuity platform (Ingenuity iReport, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, and Ingenuity Variant Analysis)
  • Agilent's SureCall software allows clinical researchers who use NGS panels for inherited diseases and cancer, to analyze, visualize, and contextualize NGS data using a single application.
  • AstridBio Technologies Inc, a bioinformatics firm with offices in Canada, Austria and Hungary offers GenoMiner Genome Analyzer - A next generation sequencing data analysis computer for life science researchers with or without IT background
  • Illumina offers clinical informatics products such as BlueFuse (provides molecular cytogenetic and in vitro fertilization (IVF) data analysis in a single framework), MyGenome App (an educational tool) and Nexus Copy Number from BioDiscovery.
  • Newport, VA- based GATACA  offers HepCBase - Software platform for tracking the diversity of hepatitis C virus genomes. HepCbase supports nucleic acid based HCV research of Sanger- and NGS-derived data.
  • Cambridge, MA –based Cartagenia's Cartagenia Bench automates genetic variant analysis

Kalorama's Next Generation Sequencing Markets 2015 contains a complete list of companies. The report includes detailed tables indicating the activities of competitors in the market. The report breaks out system, consumable and service segments and provides information on brand ownership and regional installed base of sequencers.
