Latino Art Beat and SPORTAMY Announce 2015 National Art and Film Competitions

Latino Art Beat, a national not-for-profit arts organization that has awarded over $4 million in scholarships to young visual artists through annual art competitions, today announced the kick-off of its 2015 competition in collaboration with SPORTAMY, a social media platform for anyone with an interest in any sport, to be able to express themselves and their sports interests. Submissions from currently enrolled high school and early college age students under 21 years of age across the United States will be accepted until May 25, 2015. Select winners will qualify for scholarship consideration of at least $1,000.

This year's competition theme is "What Sports Mean to Me?" and students are invited to submit colorful drawings or paintings accompanied by an essay of 350 words or less describing their original artwork. Example themes to consider include children playing sports at a neighborhood field or in their back yard and images of famous sports personalities. Latino students could also submit artwork reflecting their culture in sports, such as asoccer team in action, or their favorite baseball team.

Students that attend high schools in Latino Art Beat cities must submit their competition entries directly to their high school art department, accompanied by the Art Competition Entry Form, which will be made available through such schools. Participating cities include Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. All other high school students, as well as those in college must submit artwork electronically to Latino Art Beat along with the appropriate Art Competition Entry Form available on the Latino Art Beat website.

Latino Art Beat's Youth Short Film Competition is also now available to filmmakers under the age of 21. Films must be 15 minutes or less with original score and made after Jan. 1, 2014. Competition categories are: Narratives, PSAs, Animation and for Latino students, "My Life." All film entries must be submitted directly to Latino Art Beat. Films may be submitted on DVD or students may provide the appropriate links to their film using services like YouTube (News - Alert), Dropbox and Vimeo. A separate Film Competition Entry Form must accompany all film submissions. The deadline for this competition is also May 25, 2015.

Awards ceremonies recognizing the winners will be held during 2015 National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15). Periodic updates will be made on the Latino Art Beat and SPORTAMY websites. Students are also encouraged to email [email protected] with any questions.
