SAIC Donates More Than 1,000 Volunteer Hours to Aid Sea LionsMCLEAN, Va., March 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corp. (NYSE: SAIC) announced today that it will donate more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service to the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF) in support of the ongoing sea lion stranding crisis in Southern California. Members of the SAIC marine mammal staff will be deployed to stranding centers at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach and the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles to care for stranded sea lion pups.  "SAIC has a long history of giving back to our communities, especially in times of need. Our uniquely talented staff can contribute to this particular effort with skills and experience that are not always readily available in situations such as this," said Jeffery A. Raver, SAIC director of Training and Education. "We believe that as a team, NMMF and SAIC will provide better, more comprehensive support to save the sea lions." For more than two years, hundreds of malnourished, starving wild sea lion pups have been washing up on beaches in Southern California, according to NMMF. The NMMF scientific team believes the crisis may be the result of decreased numbers of nutrient-rich fish, an increasing sea lion population, and rising ocean temperatures. Already this year, more than 1,400 stranded sea lion pups have been picked up by rescue networks in the region. As part of SAIC's donation, employees will volunteer with NMMF at stranding centers to help care for and feed the animals, support their medical needs, and contribute to the reintroduction of the rehabilitated animals back into the wild. SAIC will team with those responsile for the husbandry of the animals and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of its personnel. SAIC will not manage or supervise non-SAIC personnel supporting these efforts.
