Baltimore Gas & Electric Wins Project of the Year for Deployment of C3 Energy Smart Grid Applications

Baltimore Gas & Electric's deployment of C3 (News - Alert) Energy Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) data analytics solutions won the 2015 Smart Grid Project of the Year award, presented by POWERGRID International at DistribuTECH last night.

Utilities were selected in four categories and judged on the project's size, scope, innovation, and benefit to the utility, its customers, and the power industry as a whole. BGE, an Exelon utility, was recognized as an innovator in leveraging next-generation technology in one of the largest, most successful enterprise smart grid application deployments at a utility to date.

"C3 Energy's applications have allowed BGE to use smart grid data more efficiently and effectively in order to optimize business processes and improve safety and reliability, while delivering clear business value," said Michael Butts, director of business transformation at BGE. "We are honored to receive the Project of the Year award, which recognizes not only the complexity and scale of our data analytics project but its broader impact on the utility industry. We look forward to building on the success of this initial implementation."

BGE deployed the C3 AMI Operations™ and C3 Revenue Protection™ applications across its entire two-million-meter service territory in May 2014 to ddress energy lost to theft and meter malfunction and to monitor meter health and operations. Deployment involved unprecedented levels of data integration, developing 42 integrations to 12 source systems. C3 Energy loaded two years of historical BGE data in a 10 terabyte federated cloud image and configured more than 140 complex analytic and predictive algorithms to match BGE's requirements and available data.

Within six months, the applications met or exceeded all business performance targets. C3 Revenue Protection identified over 8,000 non-technical loss cases with field investigation accuracy rates of 90 percent, spurring BGE to develop a new back-billing process to handle the large volume of identified cases. During the same timeframe, C3 AMI Operations identified 3,600 meter health issues with a 99 percent accuracy rate.

"BGE has been a leader in smart grid initiatives and embarked on this enterprise-wide project to address multiple value themes and rapidly unlock value for its customers. Working together, we've been able to realize unparalleled results and create a foundation for data analytics deployments at Exelon," said C3 Energy's President and CTO Ed Abbo. "It has been an honor working with the thought leaders across BGE, and we congratulate them on the 2015 Smart Grid Project of the Year award."

BGE's award-winning use of C3 Energy applications will be featured in the March/April issue of POWERGRID International magazine.
