The Winter 2015 report is based on more than 820 reviews written by business professionals.

The Grid(SM), which is created from G2 Crowd's software review engine, factors in customer satisfaction reported by users and vendor market presence determined from social and public data to rank products.

Web content management systems (also known as WCM or CMS platforms) are used to design, implement and administer digital content on the web. Most are bundled software packages that deliver a platform for developers to build and customize web templates and institute a publishing workflow.

There are both open-source and paid services in this space. Open-source programs are free and maintained by their user communities. CMS companies license their own products and offer cloud services, enhanced security and customer support.

Web content management platforms integrate with all sorts of other business technologies, such as digital analytics and conversion rate optimization applications, internal content systems like those listed in G2 Crowd's Digital Asset Management and Enterprise Content Management categories, as well as marketing technologies like marketing automation platforms.

To qualify as a Leader, a product must receive a high customer satisfaction score and have substantial market presence. WordPress, HubSpot and Joomla were named Leaders. High Performers have high customer satisfaction scores with a smaller market presence than Leaders. Acquia, Scoop.it Business and DNN Evoq Content were named High Performers. HubSpot earned the highest overall customer satisfaction score.

Across all CMS platforms, reviewers reported the product they use meets their requirements at an average rate of 84%, and on average reviewers said they were 78% likely to recommend the product they use.

Some highlights from the web content management platform reviews on G2 Crowd:

"There's such a wide array of options for free and paid plugins and themes. By far, WordPress has the largest ecosystem of experts on the Internet. It's a complete CMS with everything that any company needs to setup a site, a blog, or even a community, and customize it to their needs."
- Douglas Karr, CEO of DK New Media and CMO of CircuPress

"I work with other [CMS tools] and it can take twice as long to do something I can do in [HubSpot] quickly. The ability to clone and edit almost any content object and direct access to a file manager all makes my job easier and more fun!"
- Susan Peters, Inbound Marketer and Social Media Consultant at Terry Marketing

"Joomla is extremely user friendly. The interface is very easy to manage and I was able to manage content better than I ever had on other platforms - with a bit of training about how to navigate the back-end."
- Melissa Ripp, Digital and Content Strategy Specialist at Spacesaver Corporation

"Server [maintenance] is pretty tedious and error prone, and this is especially true due to the tight coupling between Drupal application and the MySQL server. Without proper planning and written specification on how to maintain a Drupal server, sooner or later you'll end up with a disaster instance [that] your team will regret. Acquia tries very hard to solve this problem by promoting this work to [the] system [administrators]. With a simple UI, you can finish most of the Drupal server job under minutes, from deploying a site to backing up a database."
- Fang Jin, Drupal developer at RxAnte

"Scoop.it [Business] has the fastest social feedback loops in the west. Testing content is one of the reasons I use Scoop.it. Every aspect of our content marketing depends on Scoop.it. We test things that may or may not make it to our blogs...The immediacy of the feedback makes Scoop.it invaluable for content marketers."
- Martin Smith, Marketing Director at Atlantic BT

"I've been using DNN since [Version] 3 and Evoq [Content] since about [Version] 5. Out of the box, the core modules are great...and it only seems to be getting better with each new version."
- Chris Garrett, Application Developer at Northeastern State University

Of the nearly 100 software vendors listed in G2 Crowd's web content management category, the 12 ranked products each received 10 or more reviews to qualify for inclusion on the Grid(SM).

Satisfaction rankings are generated from the user reviews, and market presence is calculated from vendor size, market share, and social impact. Based on a combination of these scores, each software solution is categorized as a Leader, High Performer, Contender, or Niche.
