Toyos Clinic Uses New Intense Pulse Light Procedure for Dry Eye Disease

The National Eye Institute states that 10 percent of women over the age of forty suffer from Dry Eye Disease, a painful irritation causing a scratchy feeling of the eyes. There is a growing number of patients reporting symptoms of Dry Eye Disease(DED) every year, with no conclusive treatment until now. In a research paper published this month in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, Dr. Rolando Toyos, MD, reported effective and conclusive results after a 3 year study on DED. The results reflected a 93 percent efficacy rate in improving patients' symptoms related to DED. The case series was conducted with 91 patients presenting with severe Dry Eye Syndrome and the treatment included Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL) with gland expression over a thirty-month time period. The study was held at Toyos Clinic, a locally owned company with practices located throughout Tennessee, including Nashville and Memphis. A series of monthly treatments followed until there was substantial improvement in the dry eye tear break-up time, a measure of tear health and stability. Over 90 percent of patients reported satisfaction with their degree of improvement and only thirteen percent reported transient reactions of redness around the lids after the procedure. As a reslt of these positive findings a larger study is underway utilizing more clinics and a larger sample size for even more conclusive results. Some clinics like the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins have already been trained by Dr. Toyos on his treatment and technology. "It is exciting to see an idea that we have been working on since 2001 mature into a treatment and technology to benefit patients who need relief from this debilitating disease."

Toyos Clinic was founded in 1998 in West Tennessee by Rolando Toyos, MD, a board certified Ophthalmologist. Dr. Toyos, a Stanford graduate, received his medical degree from The University of Illinois where he was a James Scholar. Toyos Clinic was voted one of the five-hundred fastest growing companies in the country by INC Magazine. Toyos Clinic is dedicated to research that will lead to advances in patient care in Tennessee and throughout the world.
