G&W Electric Announces Support for IEEE Power & Energy Society Scholarship Plus Initiative

G&W Electric announced another year of support for student scholarships under the IEEE (News - Alert) Power & Energy Society Scholarship Plus program. G&W is a platinum level donor and sponsor to the program.

The financial gift will enable academic scholarships for five undergraduate students studying electrical and computing engineering at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Many of those students also receive internships at G&W.

"We see the tremendous potential of these young people for addressing the electrical power challenges of tomorrow," said G&W president Jim Solari, "Nearly 60% of our industry's engineers are expected to retire in the next several years, and as these experienced baby-boomers retire, we understand the need to get young people interested in the power and energy industry. This program addresses both the shortage of power engineers and also enables G&W to recruit the top talent we will need to maintain our leadership position in innovation."

The IEEE PES Scholarhip Plus Initiative recognizes highly qualified electrical engineering undergraduate students with multi-year scholarships and assists in connecting them with relevant and meaningful career experience. Since the program launched in 2011, 732 scholarships have been awarded to 448 students at more than 125 universities, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities and prestigious engineering colleges across the United States and Canada.

As long as the scholar continues to meet renewal standards, he or she will receive up to three years of funding interspersed with up to two years of valuable, hands-on career experience. All scholarship funds are raised through the IEEE Foundation, and since the campaign launched, more than $1.3 million has been awarded.

"We are proud that IEEE selected six of our students for this prestigious honor," said Peter Sauer, Grainger Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. "Working closely with industry leaders like G&W, we are preparing students to meet the challenges of a smarter and greener electrical infrastructure."
