Prosolia's Paper Spray Tandem Mass Spectrometry (PS-MS/MS) Enables Random Access Sample Testing

Prosolia, Inc., a pioneer in the development of innovative sample introduction and ionization devices for mass spectrometry, announced today the publication of key data authored by a group led by Dr. Run Z. Shi at Stanford University School of Medicine and Dr. Nicholas E. Manicke of Indiana University-Purdue University (News - Alert) Indianapolis using Paper Spray™ Mass Spectrometry. The article titled "Rapid measurement of tacrolimus in whole blood by paper spray-tandem mass spectrometry (PS-MS/MS)" was published in Clinica Chimica Acta and made available online in December 2014.

"Paper spray mass spectrometry is a new approach that eliminates almost all of the steps commonly required for sample preparation. Also, because the extraction and ionization steps are contained within a single disposable cartridge, the analytical process is essentially what we in the clinical laboratory call "random access" (specimens are tested as they arrive, and ae not held to be run in batches)," stated Dr. James D. Faix, Clinical Professor of Pathology at Stanford and one of the authors of the report. "This is a major paradigm shift, and it brings mass spectrometry into the routine clinical laboratory in a real way. We were excited to show how well this approach works for monitoring the immunosuppressive drug tacrolimus in transplant patients. We have coined the abbreviation "PS-MS/MS" for "paper spray tandem mass spectrometry" and believe that it will soon be used as commonly as "LC-MS/MS" is today."

Based on the Paper Spray technology invented at Purdue University by Profs. R. Graham Cooks and Zheng Ouyang of Purdue University and having roots to the work by the late Nobel (News - Alert) Laureate Prof. John B. Fenn, Prosolia's Velox 360™ holds 40 discrete sample [Paper Spray] cartridges in a single magazine rack and provides fully automated analyte elution and ionization without the need for multiple steps of sample preparation or chromatography typically necessary in modern analytical workflows. The Velox Sample Cartridge processes just a few microliters of fluid for quantitative analysis of drugs allowing streamlined analytical workflows in forensic toxicology and drug development laboratories.

"The Velox 360 creates advantages for laboratory dependent organizations in reducing the complexity of analytical workflows and providing the capability of processing only a few microliters of blood instead of typical milliliter quantities. This capability opens up new possibilities for these laboratories as demonstrated in this seminal publication by Drs. Shi and Manicke," stated Dr. Justin Wiseman, Chairman, President & CEO of Prosolia.
