C Spire Helps Victims of Deadly Tornadoes in Two Mississippi Counties with Text-to-Donate Mobile Giving Program

C Spire is making it easy to help victims of severe storms and at least one deadly tornado that roared through southeastern Mississippi two days before Christmas with the launch today of a mobile giving program.

Customers can use their mobile phones to make a $10 donation that will aid American Red Cross relief efforts in the aftermath of severe weather that killed at least four people, injured 20 others, flipped cars, knocked out power to thousands and damaged homes and businesses in Marion and Jones counties.

All of the funds donated will be passed directly to the American Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims and communities affected by the tornado. To donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts, customers can type the word "REDCROSS" and send it to 90999 via text message from their mobile device.

A confirmation text response will be sent to each customer to confirm the donation. All donations will appear as a line item on the customer's bill.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the individuals, families and communities that are dealing with the immediate aftermath of these severe storms," said Jim Richmond, vice president of Corporate Communications for C Spire. "We're committed to using wireless technology to keep customers connected in times like these and t make it easy to support victims of this storm."

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has issued a state of emergency in Marion and Jones counties and emergency response teams are working to help victims, restore power and clear debris from the storms. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Mt. Carmel Church of God in Foxworth to aid storm victims.

One of the hardest hit areas was the town of Columbia about 80 miles south of Jackson, which apparently took a direct hit from a tornado Tuesday afternoon. Two people died in the twister, 20 others sustained injuries and there was extensive damage to homes and businesses.
