C3 Energy Expert Leads Seminar on Big Data Analytics for Energy Systems

C3 Energy machine learning expert and data scientist Henrik Ohlsson, Ph.D., spearheaded a full-day seminar on "Big Data Analytics for Societal Scale Cyber-Physical Systems: Energy Systems" to advance dialogue around technology development and encourage future research in the area. The seminar was held yesterday to precede the 53^rd IEEE (News - Alert) Conference on Decision and Control.

Working with University of California, Berkeley, Dean of Engineering Shankar Sastry and two Ph.D. students, Ohlsson brought together top researchers and industrial experts to speak on resilient societal-scale cyber physical systems with a focus on the energy sector. Through six sessions, the seminar provided in-depth understanding of analytics, industrial needs, incentive design, security, and privacy.

"The energy sector is one of the most rapily modernizing cyber physical systems. There is significant opportunity to leverage tools from a wide range of fields, such as machine learning, automatic control, and data privacy and security, to address potential new technologies for this important field," said Ohlsson. "Through this seminar, we brought the evolving energy system to the forefront of the conversation at the Conference on Decision and Control."

Ohlsson has worked in the intersection of machine learning, system identification, and energy for the last decade. As a recognized expert in machine learning, time series analysis, and mathematical modeling and its application to energy systems, he has published more than 70 papers in international conferences and journals and received several academic awards.

IEEE's Conference on Decision and Control, recognized as the premier scientific and engineering conference dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control, is being held Dec. 15-17, 2014 in Los Angeles.
