'From Curiosity, Creation': HUBweek to Celebrate and Engage the People Who Are Changing the World

Leaders of four of the largest institutions in Greater Boston came together today in an unprecedented fashion to announce HUBweek, a weeklong series of world-class events which will bring together leading thinkers and doers from diverse backgrounds to develop new solutions to global and local issues.

Scheduled for October 3 through October 10, 2015, HUBweek will help accelerate creativity and creation through competitions, hands-on demonstrations and collaborative conferences. The week will feature displays of emerging technologies and hackathon-type forums focused on solving major problems. Also featuring cultural performances, interactive art experiences and other exhibitions, HUBweek will showcase the diverse, singular community that is Greater Boston.

"MIT (News - Alert) is delighted to be a key partner in the HUBweek festival. By uniting so many of the region's leading institutions, HUBweek itself embodies the open, collaborative spirit that has helped make Greater Boston and Cambridge a hotbed of innovation and new ideas," said MIT President L. Rafael Reif.

"More than a conference, HUBweek will be a celebration of the world-changing ideas and solutions that have long been Boston's hallmark. We at Harvard are excited to play a role in connecting the Boston area's leading thinkers to each other, and to the world," said Harvard University President Drew Faust.

Sponsored by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, HUBweek is a neither a traditional conference nor a convntional program; it's a new gathering of the people who power the innovation and creative economies throughout our region and across the world.

"HUBweek is a civic undertaking, intended to benefit our local and global community. That is why I am proud that The Boston Globe is a title partner," said John Henry, owner and publisher of The Boston Globe. "We see our role as a catalytic convener in the community, helping to create dialogue and progress through bringing people together. And that's what HUBweek will do. It will celebrate the big ideas and bold solutions that are Boston's calling card, and will bring together leading thinkers to discuss what's next, and how we get there."

The inaugural HUBweek will consist of new events open to a broad audience and launched as collaborations between the partner institutions. In addition, partner institutions will organize a number of their own events, some new and others well established, with a more specific topic or focus. Events will be held throughout Boston and Cambridge, on the campuses of the host institutions, in the Innovation District and at other venues and locations throughout the area.

Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, says bringing together creative, curious and progressive thinkers to tackle some of the biggest problems is a formula for success. "HUBweek aims to not only showcase the most exciting work and promising ideas of today but also to find ways to push the frontiers of progress and inspire us to imagine the endless possibilities of innovation tomorrow."

One noteworthy new event will involve transforming the iconic Fenway Park into one of the world's largest classrooms where attendees will gather for master classes taught by renowned professors and accomplished speakers. MIT will host Solve, a gathering of the world's leading researchers, entrepreneurs, business executives, philanthropists and innovative thinkers to solve the most difficult challenges of our time.

HUBweek is not limited to the title partners; event leaders are working with other organizations and institutions across the region to make them a part of the gathering.

HUBweek is managed by an Executive Committee comprised of representatives of each of the four title partners and will be run day-to-day by new Executive Director Brendan Ryan.
