Staples Earns Perfect Score in Human Rights Campaign's 2015 Corporate Equality Index

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. --(Business Wire)--

Staples (News - Alert), Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS) today announced that it received a perfect score of 100 percent on the 2015 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). The CEI is a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. This marks the fifth year in a row Staples has received a perfect score of 100 percent.

"Staples perfect score on the HRC Equality Index for the fifth year in a row is a reflection of the hard work by our associates to promote a workplace that embraces and promotes diversity and inclusion," said John Burke, chief culture officer, Staples, Inc. "It's important that all associates feel valued for who they are and know that their ideas and viewpoints and beliefs will help contribute to Staples' success."

Staples was previously named one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality" by the HRC. The company has Associate Resource Groups (ARGs), a formal community of committed associates who support Staples business results, global diversity strategy, community involvement and associate engagement, including an ARG called "Out At Work," for lesbian, gay, biseual, transgender associates and allies.

Most recently, "Out At Work" organized several events that celebrated National Coming Out Day by educating the greater Staples community about LGBT related topics and issues. National Coming Out Day at Staples, which is celebrated annually on October 11th, addressed the importance of coming out at work and included empowering coming out stories told firsthand by Staples associates.

The 2015 CEI rated 972 businesses in the report, which evaluates LGBT-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBT community. Staples's efforts in satisfying all of the CEI's criteria resulting in a 100 percent ranking and the designation as a Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.
