US Warns Complex Malware Targets Water, Electricity, Energy Systems [EMBIN (Emerging Markets Business Information News]

(EMBIN (Emerging Markets Business Information News) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The US Department of Homeland Security has issued an alert to Siemens, GE and other companies about a malware campaign that targets industrial control systems across the United States, an official confirmed Thursday.

A government agency that monitors cyber attacks posted the warning last week and updated it on Monday.

The Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team said it had identified a sophisticated malware campaign that has been ongoing since at least 2011.

In an email to dpa, a DHS official said the malware was a variant of BlackEnergy malware and was aimed at a mix of industries to include water, energy, property management and industrial control systems vendors.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said DHS had not found any attempts yet to damage or disrupt the systems.

In last week's alert, ICS-CERT said that the malware targeted human-machine interface products from GE Cimplicity, Advantech/Broadwin WebAccess, and Siemens WinCC.

Last week, the White House said that security officials were investigating suspicious activity in the White House's unclassified computer network.
