Docker Names Marianna Tessel Senior Vice President of Engineering

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

Docker, Inc., the company behind the fast-growing Docker open platform for distributed applications, today announced that Marianna Tessel will join the team as senior vice president of engineering. Tessel will be responsible for rapidly growing the global engineering team, supporting and expanding the thriving partner ecosystem, and addressing the technology demands put forth by Docker's customers and partners.

"Marianna's leadership experience and knowledge of the cloud and virtualization sectors is truly impressive - her accomplishments at VMware are a testament to her incredible talent," said Ben Golub, CEO of Docker. "We are confident that her familiarity of the landscape and experience in scaling engineering teams will enable us to take full advantage of our accelerated enterprise opportunity, while putting systems in place that drive the ongoing success of our Docker ecosystem partners."

In only 19 months, the Docker open platform for distributed applications has revitalized the productivity of developers everywhere by removing the constraints of infrastructure from their development process. Docker's unique containerization approach packages applications so that code changes move from development into production in minutes instead of months. Web-scale companies like Baidu, Gilt Groupe, Groupon, Spotify and Yelp (News - Alert) are already showcasing dramatic benefits from Docker, while many of the largest financial institutions and other Fortune 500 companies are relying on the open platform to be the foundation of their next generation of distributed applications. Tessel was tapped for this Docker engineering leadership role, because she has had previous success in managing technology to meet this level of accelerated adoption in the enterprise.

With over twenty years of industry experience, Tessel joins Docker from her former position as a long time vice president of engineering at VMware, where she catalyzed tremendous technology ecosystem growth - which grew by an order of magnitude during her tenure. Tessel was responsible for technology collaborations in all areas of VMware technologies, including computer, storage, networking and cloud. Tessel will leverage that experience to support a Docker community of contributors which has tripled this year to over 650 with major contributions from market leaders such as Amazon, Google (News - Alert), IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Red Hat.

Tessel was also responsible for developing various VMware vSphere subsystems and pioneered multiple efforts while at VMware including vSphere integration to OpenStack and an engineered solution practice. At VMware and in previous roles, she has coordinated the efforts of hundreds of developers and cross-functional teams across the globe, and her impact at VMware prompted her to be included on the 2013 Business Insider Top 25 Most Powerful Women Engineers in Tech list.

Tessel has a strong product deveopment, and systems background which has provided her with technical depth to manage large teams and projects beyond virtualization and cloud infrastructure into SaaS, e-commerce and mobile. Prior to VMware, she was the vice president of engineering for Ariba, a cloud-based high volume business commerce company (now part of SAP) which is used by over 90 percent of the Fortune 100, where she led the platform engineering team that among other things ensured high availability of the service. Prior to that, Tessel was part of General Magic an innovator in the mobile computing sector, starting there as an engineer and rising to vice president.

"Docker is embarking on a similar trajectory to the one I witnessed while at VMware; what VMware has accomplished for virtualization, Docker is beginning to achieve for a new era of distributed applications," said Tessel. "Docker provides an industry-changing technology that is significantly improving how applications are being created moving forward. I am thrilled to join a team that shares the common goal of providing incredibly deep technology that solves major problems for developers and enterprises alike - which is exactly the opportunity an engineer loves to take on."
