Syniverse Enables First Two-way Interstandard Roaming

TAMPA, Fla. --(Business Wire)--

In a world still divided among incompatible GSM and CDMA standards, Syniverse has developed a new innovation and signed an agreement with a Tier 1 operator in Japan to enable the industry's first interstandard roaming in which GSM users can roam onto CDMA networks.

To meet the needs of a Japanese GSM operator, Syniverse (News - Alert) has bridged the fractured technologies by evolving its UniRoam solution to create a truly two-way environment. Now, GSM users are able to roam on CDMA networks and vice versa, enabling operators around the world to provide seamless roaming between partners, regardless of standards.

"When travelers cross borders, they want to get in touch with colleagues, friends and family without concern for behind-the-scenes technology disparities," said John Wick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Syniverse's Mobile Transaction Services (News - Alert). "Because of Syniverse's global reach to more than 6 billion devices and 1,500 mobile service providers and enterprises, we were able to evolve our UniRoam service to enable operators to meet the needs of their end users."

As the company that originally created CDMA-to-GSM interstandard roaming, Syniverse enabled the critical signaling conversion and translation, and number mapping needed for GSM subscribers to roam on a CDMA network. As a result, this new innovation enables true two-way interstandard capabilities and allows operators to focus on creating roaming arrangements with partners of their choosing in order to best meet subscriber needs - without concerns over disparate network and technology standards.

"The launch of this service provides a full suite of capabilities between CDMA and GSM technologies for both signaling and clearinghouse services that allow subscribers to enjoy the same features they would in their home markets," Wick said. "This is an excellent example of Syniverse simplifying complexity to achieve technology and business benefits for operators."

The unique features of the GSM-to-CDMA interworking enable full conversion capabilities between CDMA and GSM standards. This includes the use of Syniverse's advanced global SS7 and IPX networks, enablement of roaming subscriber authentication, registration and messaging, IMSI-to-MIN mapping, as well as the conversion of billing records from CIBER to TAP for financial clearing. Also, UniRoam will be able to accommodate LTE (News - Alert).
