(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ---------- Dollar climbs to 112 yen for 1st time since Dec. 2007 NEW YORK - The U.S. dollar rose above the 112 yen line in New York trading for the first time since December 2007.

In Tokyo trading earlier in the day, the dollar jumped from the lower 109 yen zone to above 111 yen after the Bank of Japan announced surprise additional monetary easing centering on increased government bond purchases.

---------- ASEAN leaders to discuss tension in S. China Sea at Nov. summit YANGON - ASEAN leaders are to express concern over recent developments in the South China Sea and reaffirm the importance of regional cooperation in maintaining peace and stability, diplomatic sources said Friday.



Association of Southeast Asian Nations diplomatic sources told Kyodo News that at the 25th ASEAN Summit in Myanmar's administrative capital Naypyitaw on Nov. 12 the leaders will touch extensively on the South China Sea issue and push for early conclusion of a Code of Conduct in the area where tensions are rising over maritime disputes.

---------- Ex-Nagasaki Mayor Motoshima dies at 92 NAGASAKI, Japan, Nov. 1 Kyodo - Former Nagasaki Mayor Hitoshi Motoshima, who was shot by a member of a right-wing group in 1990 after saying Emperor Hirohito bore responsibility for World War II, died Friday, the Nagasaki city office said. He was 92.


Motoshima served as Nagasaki mayor for four terms after first being elected in April 1979. After saying at the city assembly in 1988, "I believe the Emperor has responsibility for the war," he was shot by a senior member of a right-wing group and seriously injured.

---------- Ebola death toll edges up to 4,951 with cases down to 13,567 GENEVA - The death toll from the Ebola virus outbreak slightly increased to 4,951 out of 13,567 cases as of Wednesday in six West African countries plus Spain and the United States, the World Health Organization said Friday.

The number of deaths grew by 31 from the previous update on Monday, while the number of cases fell by 136. The decline in cases is "due mainly to suspected cases in Guinea being discarded," the organization said.

---------- U.S. spacecraft test flight crashes in desert, 1 feared killed WASHINGTON - A U.S. spacecraft designed for tourism crashed in the California desert during a test flight and at least one of the crew was feared to be killed, the operator and U.S. media reports said Friday.

The accident involving SpaceShipTwo of Virgin Galactic LLC occurred only days after the explosion of a commercial rocket carrying an unmanned vehicle bound for the International Space Station sent shockwaves through the United States.

---------- Tesla Motors to open temporary showroom in Osaka amid elevated interest OSAKA, Nov. 1 Kyodo - Tesla Motors Inc., a U.S. maker of electric vehicles, will open a temporary showroom in Osaka City on Saturday ahead of the establishment in spring of a permanent shop to showcase its products.

Tesla said it has been receiving inquiries and orders from customers in the region as its name recognition increased due to ties in the battery business with Panasonic Corp., a major Japanese electronics maker with roots in the western Japan city.
